I know I should know the answer to this but I’m looking for tips. My husband has had a time with his blood sugars since his transplant. He never used to have them drop but since transplant every once in awhile they have been. My question is for those of you with diabetes what do you do when you go out and your sugar drops? We were at the babies-r-us today and he started to get light headed and said he felt his sugar dropping so I ran up to the front and bought an apple juice (thats all they had). I’m thinking of making a carry bag with his spare glucometer and some snacks in it incase this ever happens to us again. What are some good snacks you would recommend that won’t get bad sitting in a bag but will bring his sugar up pretty quick? Once he drank the apple juice and sat for a bit he was fine but I was upset with myself for not thinking to bring any snacks incase this happened. Oh well live and learn.

My best friend always has hard candy in her purse. She also keeps small bags of crackers or cookies in her car. You can also get glucose tablets. Hope that helps. 😀

My friend at work always has orange juice tetra packs handy. Mixed with chocolate, she says it takes care of the drops quickly.

Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

Agree. And remember that different sugars make your bodies insulin and sugar react differently too. Apple juice was a good choice for you in that situation. But even if youre dropping sugar fast, you dont want to shock your body and take something that will zoom his sugar up quickly. You want a sugar that will do the job but also sustain his blood sugar for a while.

If youre home, believe it or not, milk is a good thing to drink to stabalize your blood sugars. I do have a rocker friend and when he is on stage, if he knows hes having blood sugar issues that night, he always has bottled OJ on stage with him and takes a few sips between songs (no chugging).

Just remember that if something can zoom your blood sugar up fast, it can also drop you just as quickly. You want to find something that will even out your curve. Theres tons of doctor and internet literature on this stuff- it can be over whelming.

Standards tho- defintely carry hard candy with you and even better, glucose tablets made especially for this very event. Never go anywhere without a little snack of something in case. You dont have to eat it but at least youre prepared.

A friend in high school used to keep lemon drops in her locker. Whenever she’d start feeling light headed, she’d go get one.

Maybe something in a wrapper would be easier to carry though. Like Jolly Ranchers.

I didn’t even think of glucose tablets. I’ll have to get some hard candy as well. I just don’t want to be stuck somewhere with his sugar crashing and no way to get it back up. We were right down the street from my old fire station that I used to work at (and my shift was on too). I told him I could give the station a call and have them come down and check his blood sugar and he had a fit with that idea. The captain there loves me so I knew it wouldn’t be an issue but hubby doesn’t want to see another ambulance as long as he lives. Of course that won’t help him if he ever visits me at work lol. Thanks for the tips 😛

I have been diabetic since I was 8 and I am 29 now. Juice is the fastest thing to raise blood sugar levels. Any sugar is good. You can buy glucose tablets that can be carried easy but juice is best. If his levels drop he needs something fast acting juice, candy, glucose tabs but he also needs solid food to stay with him in his system because sugars from candy and everything are gone again in a hour or two. Man sugars going low sucks and I feel for your boyfriend.

I’m not diabetic but if I go too long before eating (4-5 hours) I can really feel it (and it can be quite sudden). Make sure he doesn’t go more than 3 hours without eating something. Even if it just a few crackers or cheese, or something.

I get that way too, SilverArrow. I think it’s hypoglycemia or something. I should look that up. It’s not helped me lose weight at all.

Yes, I think you’re right. I used to eat large meals and then go for 6+ hours without eating. (The worse thing you can apparently do.) I’m now paying the price for it, so I have to be more careful. Smaller meals and more often.

As for the weight loss I have no place to talk. I have much weight to lose. I just hate rebounding onto the bad junk food when I don’t get enough sleep or don’t eat often enough when working out. If I find something that works, I’ll let you know.
