aw, poor fellow! He looks like he’s had a scrape or two during his outdoor adventure. Let us know what happens with him!
October 22, 2011 at 9:17 pm #860711If you keep him, get him sexed. The difference in a male and female red tail is huge. A male usually gets a manageable 5-7 feet, 40-50 pounds. A female gets a massive 8-12 feet and 80-100 pounds.
October 23, 2011 at 1:00 am #860722Beautiful animal! Anything that small with an abberant coloration like that usually won’t last long in the wild, and it seems it’s already suffered some scuffs (maybe from tangling with your righfully defensive chickens!). Congrats on such a neat find.
Forever seeking: Blackwatch the raffle Old Warrior, Jennifer Miller's pieces, and GB Baby unis!
October 23, 2011 at 2:28 am #860729Wampus beat me to it. Agreed its an Albino based on it’s red eyes. Poor thing looks VERY rough. And very relieved to be able to relax
October 23, 2011 at 3:33 am #860733From a breeders standpoint its more than just albino. It takes generations of breeding albinos to make a snow. A snow is a reduced to no pattern white snake with red or blue eyes depending on the blood lines. You can barely see the saddles on that one which is ideal. Reg albinos have much more apparent saddles and lots of pink and salmon color.
October 23, 2011 at 7:04 am #860740What a pretty guy! He sure was lucky to be found by you. 🙂 So is this species illegal to have in your area? Any chance of tracking down the original owners? From what Wampus says, there’s probably someone out there who was sad to lose him.
So glad he’s in good hands!
October 30, 2011 at 3:07 am #861246That’s definitely a snow boa. More reduced saddles with less noise would make him possibly a moonglow but I’d need a better look to confirm. They’re technically an albino anery (sorry, original post I was thinking snow ball pythons, which is albino axanthic), not a selectively bred albino. They’re way less pricey now than they were when I bought into the moonglow project (hypo snow), but it’s still a chunk of cash for your average pet owner to plunk down.
FWIW, albinos and snows do not have blue eyes, but leucistics do. As far as I know, there’s only one leucistic bci in the US, and Jeremy Stone is working with that one. They don’t know yet whether the phenotype is inheritable, but are working on it. Blue eyed leucies can be produced through several different ball python pairings, and the eyes are definitely blue blue blue. Here’s my BEL ball to illustrate:
Not trying to start a fight, just like to see correct info given. Snakes are my passion.
I’d definitely take him to the vet if you plan on keeping him. All that redness worries me. I’d want to make sure he didn’t pick up an RI or some parasites while out playing in the wild.
Good luck with him, he’s a pretty one!
November 23, 2011 at 7:44 pm #863532An updated photo of Ben, I can ;oad more when I cam get to a better computer
Had him checked out as basically healthy and a boy- his skin is ever so much better after a few sheds, though he has a scar along his jaw where they thought he probably tried to eat something too big and split the skin when he was on the loose. He is FAT now lol, though after the way he eats, he should be… he definitely doesn’t plan on going hungry ever again! I plan on selling him, really can’t afford something that eats like he does long term.November 23, 2011 at 7:51 pm #863533I love that pic with the scratcher!!!
And all I ever find in my backyard are shrews and skunks…
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

November 23, 2011 at 10:51 pm #863560It looks like you did a great job getting him healthy again, and he definitely looks happy. That would have been a great Calendar picture. 🙂
November 23, 2011 at 11:09 pm #863562He does look much better! Good work!
November 23, 2011 at 11:47 pm #863564What a beautiful snake. Great job getting him healthy!
November 24, 2011 at 1:30 am #863576I’ll PM you Wampus- it would be great if he could go somewhere I could see how he grows up! I was planning on being careful where he ends up, a eral boa fancier is perfect. Here are some more pics from last weekend, anyhow.
He isn’t microchipped, had him checked. Hoped maybe his breeder was doing their high-end babies. I’d guess he was probably purchased from a show, several come through this area… -
