Here’s hoping it’s smooth sailing until Monday…. 🙂
September 26, 2007 at 10:11 pm #618184Sounds like it’s getting better & better.
How’s the baby doing? And you? Getting any sleep?September 27, 2007 at 2:11 am #618185purpledoggy wrote:Oh DM why won’t you be posting anymore?
Danny had his one month broncoscopy today. They said everything looks find and they did a small biopsy to check for rejection. So far they said they don’t see any signs of it /yay. The doctor said so long as everything keeps going well he will come home on Monday. They are still trying to get his blood sugars in check but he has cystic fibrosis related diabetes and the diabetic nurses they have working on him have no clue what they are doing. I’m trying to put a bug in the cf teams ear about going down and helping them out. I’ve told them how to deal with his blood sugars but they don’t seem to want to listen. They keep giving him long acting insulin which drops his blood sugar too low. I finally told the nurses not to give it to him which of course made them mad but they will get over it.
Is the diabetes something that will go away as time goes on, or is he stuck with it?
We live with diabetes daily here. My best friend and housemate is diabetic. Currently we are dealing with getting his sugars under control after years of no medical coverage limiting his access to medical care. We’re also dealing with an open wound on his right foot. So far over the last month we’ve seen huge inprovements, both with his sugars and with his foot.
I hope that for Danny, the diabetes will go away as his body settles in with the new lungs and that he can be spared having to deal with diabetes long term.
Anyway, I am really glad to hear he is doing so well. Soon you guys will be able to have a more normal life, that is so great.
I can’t wait until we can celebrate his coming home.

September 29, 2007 at 12:10 am #618186The diabetes thing will never go away. He will always have it but when they lower his dose of steroids it will help keep the blood sugars from going so high. Danny called me last night at 2am freaking out with a panic attack. I told him to call the nurse and they said he blood pressure was low but everything else looked fine. When I got there this morning he was really pale and they said he was bleeding from somewhere but they didn’t know where. They said the lungs still look good. He was sent for an endoscopy where they looked in his stomach and found he had a bleeding ulcer. They said they will have to do another scope on monday because they couldn’t look at all of his stomach because of food in the way. So they gave him two units of blood but the doctor is still looking at discharging him some time early next week. Hopefully he has a good weekend and can get up and walk around since he has been so weak with the bleeding in his stomach.

Man, ulcers can be seriously bad news. My uncle Gary died from one a couple years ago. He was only 38. He’d had ulcers for a long time, so he really didn’t think he was in any danger when it started to really bother him seriously. He had no health insurance and didn’t want to run up a huge bill over something he figured would get better on its own. A day later he was gone, died of blood loss. It was devastating for my poor aunt, they’d only been together for about 5 years or so. (My aunt is only a few years older than I am, she was the youngest daughter, where my mom was the second oldest of five siblings, in case you wondering why his age and mine are so close, she was cradle robbing only a little, since he would have been about 3 years older than me now. And she’s about 5 years older than I am.)
Anyway, I’m really glad they caught the problem quickly. Bummed that he keeps having complications, where did the ulcer come from anyway? I just love these out of the blue unrelated to the surgery stuff, what the heck?
Tell Danny to get well, and we hope to hear he’s home soon, preferably home and mending without all this other stuff going on. Ulcers and panic attacks, what next? I feel for him, this whole experience has been really stressful and scary for him and you, both. Lots of love and support wishes headed your way. *hugs*
