February 5, 2009 at 5:53 am #664873Well put, Eleu.
So purplecat, just curious – do you have any idea how much it would cost to ship one of those serpents to Europe?February 5, 2009 at 2:07 pm #664874not yet…it will depend on how heavy she is…and I dont even know how much it’ll be to cast her yet! The wait for her might be a couple months yet…though I’m hoping not that long….as I need to put the rest of her scales on (her back side is bare), and then give some finer detailing to the individual scales. She’s gonna have some pretty detailing on her fins and crest too. I dont know how long it will take for the resin caster to do their part either…
I’m tentatively hoping to sell her for around $160 apiece plus shipping. She’s a full 12 inches long, and 6 inches high. I dont know yet if she’ll be a solid or hollow casting either, and that will make a big difference in shipping weight… I’ll see what I can find out…but til I have more info on what she’ll weigh…I cant really promise much yet…. 😕
February 6, 2009 at 6:25 am #664875Oh, I’m in absolutely no rush. The money’s not burning a hole in my pocket or anything. 😆
But yeah, do plan on one for me. I bet she’ll looking good in the Moss color…February 6, 2009 at 12:43 pm #664876lol…yeah, I’m really excited to see her in that color too! Though I must admit….I think she’ll be pretty cool in the bone color too….and lava.
February 7, 2009 at 12:56 am #664877Ok folks…bad news. The sea serpent is having to be reworked due to copyright issues. Please be patient and understanding while I figure out what I’ll be doing over this. For those I gave a time estimate to on the production of these, I deeply and sincerly apologize. That is all.
February 8, 2009 at 11:39 pm #664878Here’s a good explanation of what’s going on….I’ve cut and pasted it from my explanation to someone else…hope you guys dont mind!
I’ve been asked on a few fronts about this! I’ll probably post this to my thread too, so that everyone can be informed about what’s going on, if that’s ok. It actually is windstone, Melody and I have discussed it in depth now…and basically…Windstone has what is called a “Trade Dress” put on it. Trade Dress is typically not applied to art, Windstone is an exception..melody is one of the few artists to have this. What it means is that if someone can look at a piece..and even wonder if it’s a windstone, at all…is a violation of this legal protection. Melody showed the picture of my sea serpent to a group of people, and they thought it was her work. this, although frustrating (OY! definately!) from an artist’s standpoint, is exactly what trade dress covers. It’s flattering in a way, because my work could potentially be confused with someone’s art I respect very dearly, and who has been a great teacher in my learning to sculpt. Of course her being a teacher to me has influenced my work! But, this can also be seen as a good thing…I dont want to be an “imitation windstone” type artist. I desperately want a style all my own, which means I’ve reached a point where I need to explore for new techniques and tricks not used by Melody, and apply them in ways all my own. I’m gonna cut and paste a bit from my journal too on this….
by me “To those who have contacted me privately about fighting this…my answer is no. I prefer not to battle over something which is partially my fault. I acknowledge that Melody’s beautiful pieces have influenced my taste artistically, and although its perfectly fine for me to like that style, I do need to be careful about it trespassing into my own. It’s much healthier as an artist to take a step back, examine the problem, and come at it from a different angle..with a better end solution. Reworking her isnt entirely lost work, I got good practice on shaping clay (which I’m new to, since I had been carving plaster) and will now be able to try something a little harder. I’m all for improving myself, and I can choose to look at this as an opportunity to do so. That’s what I’m doing.”
by Koishii—she had to mush out all my scalework….I just couldnt do it myself….
“Yup. I smushed her scales.
PC and I talked very in depth over the sea serpent and by all means, Melody is not being absurd with what she has pointed out. In the long run, this is going to be better because it is a good driving force for PC to create a new style that is hers, especialy since she is still learning about sculpting. While pc still has a very pretty style and unique ideas, the sea serpent still was not diverse enough to make it completely different, which is something we are trying to go for here. The sculpt has a lot of awesomeness in it. right now pc is working the scales..and I think it is reallllly looking awesome. it is very different, but the affect is pretty dang cool.”

Well, I’m looking forward to seeing your unique style. And I still want a Sea Serpent. 😀
February 9, 2009 at 1:12 pm #664880I wouldn’t have mushed your working piece. You did it, even if you can’t produce it and you shouldn’t destroI it. it’s a good reminder of how not to proceed going forward, but also an example of what you can do!
I’m so sorry about this; I really liked the serpent. Personally, I don’t think it looks like something Melody sculpted, but I’m just too used to her stuff, since it’s staring at me all day long.
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmFebruary 9, 2009 at 1:28 pm #664881eh, Koishii just mushed the scales out for me, so I could restart that part of detailing, as well as changing some of her other features. 🙂 I’m still working on her, it may just take alot longer now.
February 9, 2009 at 3:23 pm #664882There are some pics showing what work I’ve done over the past couple days on my journal. I’d love opinions and constructive critisism on her. 🙂
February 9, 2009 at 3:44 pm #664883Puh, for a moment there I thought you’d smushed the whole sculpture! Definitely don’t do that, just find a new an interesting scale pattern.
Considering how cute and whismical your critters are, purplecat, I could imagine you developing a swirly, somehow curved scale design. Not necessarily taken directly from nature like Melody’s are, but rather geometric, or stencil-style…
Just an idea that may or may not make sense. 😉February 9, 2009 at 4:17 pm #664884check out my journal and let me know what you think! I’ve already done quite a bit of work on redesigning her in a different direction. I’m going for a bit more of an armored look, but still with elegance…I hope anyway! 😛
Edit….here’s a direct link to my journal, so it’s faster to view than using the button on my index page
February 9, 2009 at 4:24 pm #664885Ohh WOW I just saw the Sea Surpent in your thread link that you posted on here…He is AWSOME…Now I’m gonna have to get one once he is all done and ready to go… 😉
