All of them are so cute you just want to hug them. You are probably right that the ones that don’t become show dogs will probably be happier in a home with people. That is how I got Tristen, my red chow, he was going to be the breeder’s next show champion but as a 4 monthm old puppy in his first show he left the ring to chase cat while the judges were looking at him. That is a NO NO. I had just lost a female chow and her breeder knew Tristen’s breeder and she called me and we have both been very very happy together for over 12 years.

Some friends of my grandmothers, after their border collie died, got a new one from a breeder. This dog, Rory, was supposed to be a show dog, but was too shy in the ring. They get him home, and he’s very quiet, but they didn’t realize how quiet until someone rang the doorbell. Rory was trying his darndest to bark, but nothing came out. The evil people (dare I call them people) had cut the dogs vocal cords! 👿

😯 That’s horrible! Poor Rory. I like quiet dogs, but the idea of doing that instead of training the dog not to bark is just disgusting. 😡
August 10, 2008 at 5:07 am #714527There are various ways of de-barking a dog, few are permanent. Puppymills are well known for taking pipes and shoving them down their dogs throats to scar the vocal cords up. I find it odd that many people who find de-barking wrong have no issues with de-clawing a cat, neither of which do I agree with, BUT if it between that or the animal being abandoned I would pick the operation, JMHO. I have no issues with docking or cropping either as long as they are performed by a vet.

You’ve got a good point there. I guess I’m one of those people, and my initial reaction is rather hypocritical. I suppose part of the discrepancy is because of what I’m used to. I never knew de-barking was something really done, so cutting vocal chords just seems… wrong. I’m quite accustomed to de-clawing cats, docking tails, and cropping ears. Objectively, I’d say they’re wrong (altering an animal for your convenience/aesthetic preference), but it’s always seemed “normal” to me. I suppose cutting chords would be on the same level.
August 10, 2008 at 7:32 am #714529And it does depend on the country you are raised in, the forum members who are from Europe are probably going to be appalled that we find any of it athsetically pleasing since it is all banned there.
August 10, 2008 at 12:04 pm #714530We don’t de-claw cats over here – just put up with the clawed furniture 😉 . De-barking or ear cropping & tail-docking are all illegal in Scotland but in England tail docking is allowed to be carried out only on working dogs & if done by a Vet .
August 10, 2008 at 12:33 pm #714531Personally I dont like de-clawing because it can leave a cat defenseless if they get loose, I also deal with the clawed furniture. I can understand why someone would de-bark their dog, I also prefer training, but would rather than then having the dog re-homed. Cropping and docking are done because we like the way it looks, now docking is done at less than 3 days, if anyone has ever been in the room when it gets done you will know that it doesnt really bother the pups, a quick snip a drop and glue and they are back with mom, at least in my experience. I find people want to crop and then have no clue how much work it is afterwards, several months of constant and careful care for some breeds, Dobes and Great Danes with show crops example.
I also understand why some countries banned it, BUT I am also glad I live in a country that has not taken this right away from me, IMO both of these surgeries are less invasive and a spay and just as necessary, if you are responsible.
August 10, 2008 at 5:45 pm #714532I think all alterations on an animal for aesthetics or for any other reason, is wrong. This includes docking, clipping ears, declawing, debarking, or whatever else that is permanent.
Giving your pet a haircut is okay, though. As long as you know what you’re doing so that you don’t injure the animal, or take him to a professional if you don’t. 😉 I’m seriously considering giving Kimi one, it’s brutal in here…
August 10, 2008 at 6:07 pm #714533I personally don’t like docking, cropping, or de-clawing, but I wouldn’t begrudge anyone else the ability to do it. Everyone is different; what works for one may not work for the other. I would not want something I enjoy taken away from me because enough people disagree with it and it became banned. As long as it is professionally done, if people want to crop, dock, or de-claw their pets, I’m okay with that.
August 10, 2008 at 7:08 pm #714534This is the first time I have heard of cutting a dogs vocal cords to keep them from barking and I think that is horrible I wish someone would do that to the person that did that to poor Rory.
