No – he was fine, very well packaged. It was another oriental I got off ebay to complete the family that the seller wrapped in bubble wrap only. The poor dragon was clunking around in the box and was in multiple pieces.

I’m sorry about that one and the stupid person that packed that one. I’m glad to know the one I sent back and forth across the country made it in one piece. I though that was what you said originaly but just wanted to make sure

I have had two claims with the UPSP. One item never arrived and the seller took care of the claim and refunded my money. The second item arrived damaged and I was refunded after the seller sent me proof of insurance and I made a claim. I had one claim with UPS. They came and picked up the box and item. They refunded my money, but it was heartbreaking because it was a Michael Whalen Guardian of the Fortess Chess Set. I hope somebody at UPS kept it and tried to fix it or something. I don’t like to think of it in a dump somewhere. 😥

I LOVE that chess set. I have a pewter chess set that is Gold VS. Silver. The gold is gold plated of course. It’s AWESOME. It has a glass board with Black and Gold foil art squares. The Rooks are actual Castles, the Knights and Women riding Griffins, the Bishops are large Wizards holding crystal balls and carrying a walking stick, the King looks like a furious Merlin holding a lightning bolt in one hand and an eagle on the other and my favorite is the Queen she looks like Medusa she is holding her crystal ball in one hand over her head and is pointing in front of her with the other hand she also has a large female cat behind her. The pawns in silver are little wizards with eagles and walking sticks and the gold pawns look like little orinetal women each holding a crytal ball. It is truly AWESOME. In 1989 this set cost me $650 for the pieces and board the Michael Whelan origanly was $1200 and the lowest I have seen it offered for was $600

That sounds awesome!! Do you have a picture? I never got another Whalen set. I just don’t have the room for one now. I bought my husband a Dragon’s Keep chess set (Franklin Mint) for Christmas. I gave it to him early and he really likes it. It’s a very well done piece.

I once won 500$ back from the insurance for this baby:

whom they fully ruined before the artshow he was supposed to be. That was and still is one of my favourit dragons. He’s my baby. My first big dragon.
Every firm, most of them, will fight to not pay insurance, especially if we are talking of 3 digit numbers. At first when my “agent” applied in US they said “yeah sure insurance fine, 20 bucks, what how much? no DHL germany has to pay”.
DHL germany to me “nope, the receiving country, in this case USA, pays”
            me: “what?”
It was a long and a hard fight, it took august until april with severe kicking from both sides, my US friend who got him, and me, from Europe. They will play pingpong with you, dont let yourself get down or be talked into nonsense like “we aint got no contact addy” ( mind you, I wrote my complaint to a freight address, not DHL officially). Explain your case again and again, stick to your paper/receipt if you have insurance it is your right. Point. Eventually in my case it also helped when I quoted them their own insurance guidelines and told them that I send a lot via DHL and that I’d never use them again. I think I sent them that letter 3x, always via “sealed option” (meaning they have to sign when they receive it).
Thats when they reacted and asked me to prove his value. sent my certificate of authenticity and a list of the materials (which eventually made 150$ if you added all shipping). Hacked some more and then they gave up.
            dont give up.
good lucK 🙂 keep us updated

Cool, thanks. I would love to see it. I Googled it (with the correct spelling of Whelan – my spelling sux ha ha), but nothing came up.

well this was my pewter chess set we where talking about. It’s not Michael Whelan. I got it from a game store in a mall in 1989 and I think it was origianlly from the Belena Bay Pewter Smiths. I’m not really sure where it origianlly came from but I seem to remember that they had it at the Belena Bay Pewter stall at the Renn Faire a year or 2 after I bought it. I also bought the board in the Belena Bay Pewter store on Pier 39 in 1989. I’m not even sure if Belena Bay is still in business, I have never been able to find them or the chess set on line

I tried to search for a pewter fantasy chess set but did not get anything even CLOSE to my set

I am currently still waiting for a reply from St. Louis myself.
I got home from work one day, looked at the box that my Guardian Dragon came in (mind you, he WAS mint when he left the seller’s hands) and thought…Oh S**T!! Yep, another box from the wonderful 🙄 USPS that looked like it had been kicked form its sending point to its ending point. My boyfriend had picked it up, and joking with me over the phone earlier in the day had said he’d opened it (jokingly ofcourse, he knows better 😉 ) and it was fine. When he picked it up the post mistress here looked at it doubtfully herself, as did he. But with it being double boxed and all it should have been fine. Inside the first box: I find the top of the 2nd box blown outward and can fit 2 fingers into it, pulling it back I find the top left horn completely broken off (but it can be glued back on) and the top of his crown shattered! I was in a rage, said not one word as I stormed out of my house without even taking it out of the box. 👿
I got in my car, slammed the door hard enough to make it rock on its springs, and sped up the road half a mile to the PO. I got out of my car and slammed the door again, cursing under my breath(because it was the 2nd time this had happened)the entire time. I looked up to notice the PO emloyees (including the post mistress herself) looking through the big picture window in the front of the building, watching the fuming woman approaching. Once inside (shaking uncontrollably by now) I walked right up to the desk and pulled the inner box out and stuck my finger in the hole. I asked her what in God’s name could cause such horrific damage to a double boxed item. Her reply was,”I saw the box when your boyfriend came to get it, and thought *oh I hope it’s ok*.” I said it wasn’t, but not in the nicest way. When she handed me the form and filled out the papers infront of me (after we had opened the inner box together), I said I wasn’t letting them send it anywhere else to break it further, and if it had been car insurance and my car had been damaged I wouldn’t have to give up my car to get the money, she said she understood and would definately stand behind me (and let me take him back home with me! 😀 ). For once, I feel like there might be a possibility I win in the end. But still waiting to hear either way. It isn’t unrepairable, but for heaven’s sake, when the box is marked FRAGILE on all sides and THIS END UP then treat it with respect. Besides it wasn’t my dog that bit you forever and a year ago and you just can’t seem to get over it! (But it could have been poop from the neighbor’s dog, that you stepped in…) 😛

Ack…I dont have any good stories. I still have not received my check for the white mom I bought. Arlla filed a claim on the peacock mom I sent her a while back, but I dont know if she has heard anything. I have not. Have you, Arlla?

Ski – I did in fact get something from the post office, but it looks completely worthless. I think it’s just a receipt saying that I filed the claim. The last claim I filed took about 2 months, and that one was all within the USA. It might even take longer since this one was shipped internationally. Just sounds like something that would give them an excuse to take longer!
