yup its a funny thing with foods… the best out there might now be the best for your dog, you may need something simpler. once again also, you can be a fabulously loving, ideal owner and feed something basic. 🙂 my friend was feeding her dog pedigree and he looked great, super coat great skin, but horrific gas. most boxers do have bad gas though, its a push-faced breed trait. anyway, i told her to give nutro natural choice a shot, and low and behold the gas went away and he poops less, which she likes too. another friend who has a boxer too tried every premium hard to find food and her boxer was a mess on them all… what saw well with him? iams! whoa! it made no sense, but it was the only thing he could eat, she was mortified but she said hey at least hes ok on it.
i free feed my dogs a mix of nutro ultra puppy and adult food, with canned natural balance at night as a treat. now, i had tried giving them natural balance dry instead of the ultra, and in THREE DAYS they all started having attacks of collapsing trachea/reverse sneezing!!!! now, even though natural balance rates higher on ruffs’ math scale, he does not add glucosamine and chondroitin like nutro and other companies do with their food. i have 4 papillons and a japanese chin, both breeds are prone to collapsing trachea / reverse sneezing no matter how well they are bred, its just cuz they are so small with tiny throats.those two supplements strengthen the cartilagey rings in their windpipes, (just as it helps a big dogs hips and knees) preventing them from choking. i was so surprised to see what an immediate difference it made when they did not have that supplement how quickly they started having problems!! i switched back to the nutro ultra right away and the problem went away as fast as it came on. before nutro i fed iams, which they were a mess on, science diet, etc. and at the same time i gave a separate supplement for the gluc. and chond., but they still choked etc. but not as much. it totally went away thanks to the nutro ultra, plus i didn’t need to buy anything extra!!i really wish natural balance would put those supplements in their food cuz he has such a great product and philosophy.
btw, i rarely suggest nutro ultra to people, as it is one of, if not the most protein/fat high foods on the market, at 30/15 protein/fat for the puppy.. that is way too much for most dogs, for they would get fat fast on it, but for me with my high energy zany papillons, they are actually perfect to lean on it!!!! on previous foods they were waaaaay too thin. they have tiny bellies too, so every bite counts with them to keep em charged up.so that food it good for fussy , small breeds that are active, that are also not prone to obesity, like say a bichon or beagle.January 11, 2007 at 6:14 pm #526447dragoness, be sure when to are new food shopping that you really read the ingredient panel, to avoid corn and wheat… hes da thing, say you go for a lamb and rice food, it sounds good initally, but alot of companies STILL put corn and or wheat in it, even though it says lamb n rice!!!! its really misleading so watch out! also, while nutro is a good middle of the road food which is pretty easy to find, their MAX line, which they made to be more affordable, has some corn or wheat in some of the flavors. it is NOT the same as the natural choice line by them. i merely mention nutro for it is more accessible to peeps depending where u are. in upstate new york thcy even sell it at the “tractor supply warehouse”, and agway; good for them!!
science diets natures best line which look healthy at first glance with its pretty packaging, has tons o junk in it, doesn’t sound like the “best”to me, starting with brewers rice, ground wheat, turkey meal, corn gluten meal, soybean meal and animal fat!!!!!! ouch!yet they claim “highest quality” ingredients!!lol.
anyway, bottom line is whatever it says on the front of the bag, still read the ingredients cuz they sneak stuff sometimes! good luck shopping!!January 11, 2007 at 6:20 pm #526448Nutro Ultra seems like it is a good food. I know pugs can get very fat if you feed them a lot of food. I tend to limit my dogs so they don’t get overweight. The breeders told me that one of the reasons they choose Iams is because it isn’t expensive and it makes it so they poop less. Yeah, I will defiantely start reading the labels from now on.
What is a good price for Nurto Ultra? What is the biggest size it comes in?
January 11, 2007 at 7:53 pm #526449dragoness, adult ultra food comes in 4.5lb. bags ~ 8.99 17.5lb. for ~26.99 and 35lb. ~ 38.99 thats about the going price online. it rarely goes on sale anywhere that i’ve seen, but the regular natural choice does all the time. a popular natural choice formula if you have trouble finding the ultra or if its too expensive is their lamb n rice small bites. its popular with folks with little dogs, we sell out of it every week in about five days, and we get a double batch weekly! that goes for 5lbs for 7.99 20 lb. for 19.99 and 40 lb for 32.99 those are just average prices from petco… a mom n pop shop may have it for less. p.s. online prices for petco or petsmart don’t necessarily match the physical store, as shipping to the store may be tacked on, but you will pay more for shipping to your house for heavy food, so call around close to you, see what they have. i’m out to go run errands but good luck in your quest. ps. your pug may get pudgy on the ultra, but see how u do! 🙂

Sweet, we have petco and Petsmart out here. I think it is a little more for what I was paying, but in the long run it will be worth it. Thanks.
January 11, 2007 at 10:47 pm #526451Have you tried making your own food? I know of someone who doesn’t feed their dog regular dog food. They mix up their own stuff (they researched it before they tried it). Their dogs are totally healthy and they don’t have the normal doggy smell, especially on their breath.
One of my dogs (both Cocker Spaniels) can only eat this one type of Liver food. We got him a few months ago and wanted to see if he could eat what our other dog was already eating. We tried a little and within 3 days, we found his stomach to be too sensitive. Same type of food, but the Liver is gentler on his stomach than the chicken stuff.
My sheltie that I had until May I would regularly have to give a mix of regular rice with various amounts of dog food. Some breeds are just notorious for sensitive tummies (Shelties, Cocker Spaniels). Then there Bassetts on the other side of the spectrum. Natural born hoovers… with an exhaust problem. 😆
I’ll try to find out what she cooks up for her dogs.
January 11, 2007 at 11:11 pm #526452HA!! My dog, Lady, won’t touch rice- it’s the equivalent of broccoli or other green things as far as she is concerned and EVERY TIME she gives us this look as to say “You’re joking right?”

I haven’t tried to mix up my own food. I am not sure if I would be motivated enough…lol.
I asked the vet what I could feed them when their stomach is upset and they told me some cooked hamburger meat with rice. But I will try anything once.January 12, 2007 at 12:16 am #526454dragonessjade wrote:I haven’t tried to mix up my own food. I am not sure if I would be motivated enough…lol.

She has poodles (toy I think). She uses steak (any will do… just cut most of the fat out) and mixes it with some vegetables. If she goes out to eat and anyone has any leftover beef they won’t finish and don’t want to take as a doggie bag, she will take it home with her for the dogs. Granted small poodles don’t eat as much as something larger though, but it’s an option and I thought I’d throw it out there.

I know that look all too well 😉

What kind of veggies? Thanks for finding out.January 12, 2007 at 5:52 am #526456WOW, lots to read 😯 I’m working my way through the replies, but I just wanted to say, I don’t know for a fact that these people are breeders. I just thought it might be a possibility since they live in the country and have 4 husky dogs. They may just be husky lovers, and one of their huskies may have been loving on another one (since she is expecting pups)
Siber-ow did she “mix up the food” that she made herself? As in a blender or a spoon?
And those with destructive huskies who went on hunting rampages, were those male dogs? I would think males would have a stronger tendancy towards hunting and agressiveness than female dogs. I did read somewhere in one of the books I got that females adjust better to new surroundings than males. Our little kitten meowed and cried the first night we had him. After that, he was silent for almost the next year. Even today (18 months later) he will not meow. He just squeaks and grunts, so although I had not thought about it, I would understand if she howls the first night. Although, if she was having dominance problems with the other dogs, she might think “Phew! I finally got away from those fools!” haha

Nope! Our Jenna is definately female. 😉 You should have seen her the day she was walking down the street with a 20lb woodchuck hanging from her mouth.. 😯
One thing I noticed on Husky Haven’s website is that they have a lot of really pretty dogs right now! I used to talk to the people that ran it when they’d come into my store in Houston… they were very nice. 🙂

The thing to remember about cats and dogs (and this isn’t true every time, but as a generalization it usualy is):
Think of the wolf pack, who does the hunting and the protecting: The male. The female raises the pups and does back up duty.
Think of a pride of lions, the males are lazy, they sit around lounging all day and eat when food is killed for them. The females are the hunters, protectors, and raise the kits.
Before I get jumped on, I know this is very general, and that both genders play all roles, especialy when separated and so on and so forth, and that it varies with breed, environment, owners, but usualy it’s a descent rule to go by if you’re trying to decide between male and female.
January 12, 2007 at 5:59 pm #526459I agree that the Male Lions do not do much. I would like to know how they got labeled as the King of the forest??

Because he’s learned to make the woman do all the work! All the other animals admire his wit and cunning, thereby declaring him king lol
