I was living in Illinois in ’93 when the Mississippi flooded and we were being excused from classes (university) to help people move out of their homes. Raging rivers are recognizably dangerous, but it must feel much more wearing for it to be such a slow, unstoppable thing. (Like the videos of people in Hawaii with the lava flows just creeping slowly toward their homes and knowing there’s nothing you can really do.)
I really hope the water starts receding soon and your home is not damaged.Yeah? Whereabouts in Illinois? We sandbagged several times that year in the smaller places near where we lived.
April 24, 2008 at 6:38 pm #687648Lots more good thoughts for you, BDW. Just be safe!
April 24, 2008 at 9:49 pm #687649Sorry I know I had promissed pictures late last night or early this morning but I had a terrible night and this morning I was running late.
Here they are:
Even the morning doves don’t have a dry place to go.
Fishing on my lawn anyone? π
April 24, 2008 at 11:09 pm #687650Is there much hope at this point that you won’t get flooded??? π

Well right now it’s the same as yesterday so maybe… but we are getting lots of rain all next week. I hope it just passes us.

I wish there was some way you could send me the rain. It doesn’t work that way though…. π
April 24, 2008 at 11:19 pm #687653I don’t know how I missed this thread. I really hope the rain stays away from you. Is that really your yard?
I’ve heard a lot of people were really having a tough time out East. I truely hope you make it though unscathed.May 3, 2008 at 12:32 am #687654What’s the latest on the flood?? Is the water going down yet? (crosses fingers)

I was in Edwardsville at the time, but we even helped out just outside of St. Louis (small town, I can’t remember the name for anything π )
BDW: what’s going on with your flood? Any good news?
May 7, 2008 at 3:21 am #687656Well it’s at 10 inches below the top of the wall but it’s been like that for over a 1 1/2 week. π Luckily we did not get any big amount of rain so far. But when it gets windy you should see what it does to our flower beds and property π― All my mint is gone!
May 7, 2008 at 4:28 am #687657May 7, 2008 at 11:18 am #687658Our cement wall is now threatening to collapse due to the waves crashing over the wall and draining under the cement slab by the edge of it where the lawn meet it. It’s eating away at all the stones that is under and washing it into the river from the bottom of the wall. π― We can’t use it anymore.
This is the reason why I’m glad the river did not stay right at the edge of or house wall. Could you imagine the damage from such waves on a house.

The mint will come back in droves! (Hmmm, you may need a starter, though π )
I really hope your house comes through and the mint (and wall) are the only things really hurting. You live in such a beautiful area, maybe I’ll come help replant your garden πMay 7, 2008 at 9:28 pm #687660Oooo, ooo, ooo, ooo! Replanting garden party at BDW’s! Maybe afterwards she’ll hold a photography hints class?
