Blackdesertwind, how did you train your cats to leave your birds alone?
Yeah. I wanna know that too.
Me three! 😀
April 6, 2008 at 7:53 pm #687587I’m not BDW, but we trained the cats to stay away from the bird cages by using a squirt bottle. The smaller birds (keets, bourkes and canary) are high up with no room for the cats to jump up next to the cages. The others are in large freestanding cages. If they stood up against the large cages, esp. the rosellas, they would likely loose a toe. 😆 😉
April 15, 2008 at 1:53 am #687588😳 Sorry for taking so long to replying.
The internet has been working on and off for a couple of weeks now.
I’ve also been getting ready for the ‘possible flood’ from the river. 🙁 Only 3 inches left and it’s over the wall then all it’s going to need to get inside the house is about 3 to 4 feet high. 😯Here is the setup I have for my birds.
The canaries are in the biggest cage and the finches in the medium one.
Raven (the big male) used to jump on the big cage when he was younger but I would tell him the word “NO” and clap my hands and that would be enough to get him off then I would say ‘bad boy’.
Once in a while I had to use the famous squirt bottle at night and again say the word “NO”.
Now he just hears me say no as a warning and he gets away from what ever he was going to do.
Same process when I got Sienna.
But if one of the birds gets out of the cage…watch out! It becomes free game.
If that happens I locate and secure the cats right away!
If I was to concentrate on catching the bird instaid, then one of the cats would get to it first.
And never discipline a cat by hitting him with your hand.
They respond very well to a firm and moderately loud “NO” with the clapping of hands if you get them used to it.April 15, 2008 at 1:58 am #687589I hope the water doesn’t rise anymore!!! 🙁 Where will you evacuate your pets to, if it does!!! 😕

There are 2 possibilities:
For the cats and the birds is to bring them at some friends house, they are also close to the river but much higher up! If they would get flooded my house would be 12 feet under water.
The other possibility for the birds only is a petshop in a different city. They would take care of them for a daily fee. But I’m a little affraid of bringing them there. I wouldn’t want one of their staff to sell some of my birds by accident and I’m also affraid of contamination from other birds since they would be right next to other cages.April 15, 2008 at 2:17 am #687591I’d definitely be worried about them getting sick at the pet shop. I hope you don’t have to worry about it at all, but your friend’s house sounds like the best plan. Do they know when the flood will crest?

I don’t know but it all depends on when they open the dam to let the water from the north down hear. If it has a chance to get lower before they open then we should be fine but right now, if they were to open them we would be in trouble.
Here is a link with the pictures of about 5 years ago and just think that at the level you see in the pictires it is just about 3 feet over what the level is at the present time.http://www.windstoneeditions.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6855&highlight=flood
The level at the present time (our cement wall is lower then our neighbours):
April 15, 2008 at 4:33 am #687593Oh my gosh, I hope your house doesn’t flood! I’m glad you’ve got an evac plan for your pets, though. The height of that water worries me, it is already so high! 😯 I don’t blame you for not wanting to leave your birds in a pet store. We had to leave our dog in the pound after getting him neutered; when we got him back, he had picked up kennel cough. 🙄 Thanks for the response, I completely understand the delay, so please don’t worry about it. I’m just glad you’re safe.
April 15, 2008 at 4:12 pm #687594I hope you don’t flood, BDW….I’m thinking lots of good thoughts for you.
April 20, 2008 at 8:27 pm #687595Update on the river situation;
It’s breaching the wall. The following 2 first pictures are taken at the exact same level as the patio door. You can see that if the river level goes up another 2.5 feet it should be around the same level as the door.
The following picture shows water collected in my man made dry creak. It does not come from rain but from the river level itself. The river waters are soaked in the earth. When we walk on our lawn it’s like walking on a soaked up sponge.
April 20, 2008 at 8:51 pm #687596Oh, no! I really hope you don’t have to evacuate.
April 20, 2008 at 9:11 pm #687597Yikes. Keep my fingers crossed for you.
April 20, 2008 at 10:10 pm #687598I hope it doesn’t go any higher!!! It has to start going down sometime!!! I hope it’s sooner rather than later. 🙁 I’ll keep sending those good thoughts your way.
April 20, 2008 at 10:44 pm #687599I hope you don’t have to evacuate as well! You are in my thoughts also!
April 20, 2008 at 11:00 pm #687600More good thoughts for you!
