So recently I’ve been selling random things on ebay. Today I sold my recent Keeper statue and suddenly got a message on my account saying “you’re near your limit” and they are trying to force me into adding my bank account. (In the past, I’ve only gotten this message from buying, never selling)
I’ve read some internet websites and apparently, some people’s accounts have been frozen, and their money never given to them if they don’t add their bank account. (Among other things)
        http://www.aboutpaypal.org http://www.paypalsucks.com/
Does anyone know about this? Has anyone had anything happen by refusing to add bank information to their account? I simply refuse to add it. I don’t believe paypal is safe as it is (I NEVER leave a card number on the website), so I would never want that kind of information on the web. If my account gets hacked, and I have bank information on it, there goes all my money (not like I have any, hence selling recently. Big debt due to vet bills). As it stands now, if they hack my account, they have nothing. I want it to stay that way.

I’d request a check right now if I didn’t plan to sell a few more items within the next few days. I just want to make sure paypal doesn’t scam me.

I’ve had my account on paypal for years and I’ve never had a problem. In fact, I learned the hard way that paying a website through paypal is safer than using your debit card. I paid a website for some computer software once and that company used my debit card everyday for an entire week-charging me several hundred dollars for $30 worth of software!! When you pay using paypal, stores can’t charge unless you authorize it first. So I’m actually a big fan of paypal rather than typing in my debit card!!

Yes– as a seller, after I sold (x) amount of dollars I was required to upgrade my Paypal account and had to verify it with a valid bank account.

If you do not I am unsure what happens… they may freeze your account, or probably just not allow you to accept any more incoming transactions.

I’ve had paypal since 2000 and haven’t had a problem with security but it is a risk I am willing to take in order to complete paypal transactions, since I rely on for about 80%+ of my income, so as you can imagine it is worth the risk to me. If it’s not worth the risk to you you can explore other options. I am not innately familiar with it but there is an alternative of google checkout I believe, though I am unsure if you can use it in correlation with eBay auctions or not (I don’t mess with eBay selling anymore so I am unfamiliar with their new policies). https://checkout.google.com/sell/?gl=US&hl=en

            Best wishes!

If I was as popular as you in terms of art, I’d probably verify for that and take the risk 😉 But I’m not. It’s hard to get popular in art… When someone actually does want to pay for my art (always just a friend of mine… never a random person), it’s such a low amount they just send me cash :/
I generally only sell Windstone pyos, and ebay is really the only place that they tend to sell. I was happy about potentially being able to pay off my $400 dollar vet bill within a week or two… but now this comes up.
I still don’t trust paypal. My mother’s card number was stolen off of paypal once and charged hundreds of dollars. It was several years ago, but I still don’t trust it. Specially when reading “horror stories” from people who have used paypal, and paypal does nothing to help.

Arhg. Just don’t know what to do…

I think paypal has customer service. Have you tried contacting them and explaining your concerns? Maybe they could help you.

I have a secondary account that I keep about $100 in that is linked to my paypal. That way if it does get hacked they don’t get to my real account. You can set up no interest bearing free checking accounts at most banks. I had the same fears you did.

I do the same thing, though mine is a free savings account. Not only does this account protect my “real” account, I can use withdrawals from it to pay for things through Paypal. Very handy for small eBay purchases.

Ditto the above posts on a different account but I went one further step and opened an account at a different bank too (read some of the horror stories). It only has 100.00 in it but qualifies as a real account for paypal. It’s funny but the other bank is actually closer to my house and next to the grocery store where I shop. I’m still nervous about it however…

I kind of think most the horror stories of PayPal theft is a result of people falling for scam emails, by clicking on links and releasing their information. These emails come to me a couple of times a year, and look absolutely 100% convincing so to a person who is newer or not familiar, it is easy. Often they come from someone who has bid on an auction, they can glean ‘some’ personal information from eBay – a personal name that comes in an email address and viola, they have some convincing information that can look really legitimate.

Also, I vaguely remember when I was new, that in order to receive some people’s payments, you have to go to a Premier account, which always sticks you as so many folks use a credit card to pay, thru paypal. My checking account only accepts money, I don’t ever pay from there. I always use a credit card. I feel much safer that way. I didn’t realize you HAD to attach a checking account to your PayPal. But you are getting some good advice, set up a bank account, keep the balance low if you have concerns.

                      GOOD LUCK TO YOU!

If I recall correctly, I asked this very same question probably a year or so ago. To keep my account I did end up verifying it in the end. At first I did it through their credit card, but they raised the rates on it through the roof when the new credit card rules came into effect and used the new rules as an excuse to charge an obscene rate. Well, that ended that. I did end up using a bank account to verify it afterward, and haven’t had a problem with it. Like others have said, you can open a back account specifically for the paypal account and some accounts don’t require you to have much money in them. Like others say, this will prevent a hacker from stealing from your main account. Also, on another note, there is another law that passed regarding overdraft protection making sure that you choose whether you want it or not. I would make sure that your new account doesn’t have overdraft protection so that the bank won’t charge you a fee and allow an overdraft of this account should someone manage to hack into the account.

Add me to the list of people who use a non primary bank account for Paypal. Just a couple months ago I signed up a free checking account with another bank; no miminum funds required each month (though an initial deposit of $50 to open), and no overdraft protection. I keep no substantial funds in it so it wouldn’t do an internet thief much if they obtained the number.

Thanks everyone! I’ve read about others opening a separate bank account, but wasn’t sure if that’s the way I should go. If I can get a free checking account, with a low minimum then I could go for that. I’ll have to hit the bank up here within the next few days and see about it.
I’d still have to request checks from paypal though, I suppose. Since I’d need the money in my actual account lol.

Oh, and @ Poems, I get those emails often enough. Thankfully I’m not new to the internet, so I’m aware 😉 But yes, I can understand how someone can get hacked by them.
