Hmm, can’t say as I watch many of the ‘classic’ horror films. The degree of violence and gore is similar though to some of the more modern films like Saw perhaps (I don’t watch those either, but I’ve seen enough from trailers).
I found it wasn’t so much the blood itself that got me, but the sensitivity to another’s pain as well. The violence and damage is extremely realistic, and you know you’re watching a drama, not a cheesy and clichéd gross-out terror flick. You feel more able to relate to these people because they’re more real, rather than mere stock (disposable) characters. It’s the thought of doing these things to other human beings that assaults your psyche more than anything.
I’m trying to think of a better comparison to another movie. Like I said, it’s not quite the worst I’ve ever seen (I tell myself), but the way it usually comes out of nowhere comes as a shock. Perhaps knowing about it beforehand would give you some immunity however…
January 19, 2007 at 4:23 am #529009I have never even heard of this movie yet
January 19, 2007 at 4:42 am #529010There’s an official site if you’d like to know more:
January 19, 2007 at 4:45 am #529011it does look interesting and like something everyone here would like
January 19, 2007 at 9:14 am #529012Hmm. I just saw a making of special tonight…it just looks so COOL! I think I have to be brave and go see it. Here’s hoping I’m not scarred for life!
(you know what movie did sort of scar me for life – The Cell. I still have creepy flashbacks to the horse scene and the intestines scene…eeew. I wish I hadn’t seen that movie.)

-J R R TolkienJanuary 19, 2007 at 5:42 pm #529013Well, I don’t think it would scar many adults (except maybe those who’ve lived a completely sheltered life) but you sure won’t forget some scenes for awhile.
As of today though, the memory and unease has faded considerably for me. So plan on a day or two of squirming and disgust whenever you recall a scene, especially as you sound to have a high tolerance as well. 😉
January 19, 2007 at 5:55 pm #529014It looks interesting but I’m still broke right now
January 20, 2007 at 7:11 pm #529015does anyone know when it comes out in the US. I can’t find a date or anything. says in theathers december 2006 but not here in TX.
January 20, 2007 at 7:19 pm #529016Check the official site and click “Theatres and Tickets” to see a list of cities it’s currently playing in. They say more cities are to be added starting Jan 26, so it’s sort of staggered and being run in select locations only (even the theatre I saw the preview in won’t be running it regularly yet, it would seem).
January 20, 2007 at 7:29 pm #529017This movie looks really interesting to me…but I’m kind of hesitant about seeing it because I’m not much for graphic violence. Even the stuff in “Braveheart” was a bit much for me…which is one of the reasons that I still haven’t seen “Apocalypto” even though that movie looks really interesting too…
January 20, 2007 at 7:37 pm #529018I do not like violence either
January 20, 2007 at 9:54 pm #529019That you so much for your review DigitalDragon. Extremely violent movies don’t phase me (except scenes of animals cruelty) but I do have to be in a certain “mood” to see movies with realistic violence so I really appreciate the heads up. When it starts playing around here I’ll definitely go see it.
January 20, 2007 at 9:56 pm #529020each movie is different like my mom and grandma said sometimes strong language is esential to plot I guess it could be the same with violence
January 24, 2007 at 4:47 am #529021Well, my fiance and I finally saw it. We were a little disappointed! Me more than him, I think…
The main problem I had with it was how LITTLE fantasy there was. The preview made it look like it would be about half and half…but just about every fairy tale scene that was in the movie was shown in the preview.
Second: it was just too depressing.
The gore wasn’t TOO bad, though I do feel that most of it was completely unnecessary to the story – The violence wasn’t unnecessary, but the close-ups just seemed gratuitous. They really went out of their way to show certain things they didn’t have to.
Finally – THIS MAY SORT OF BE A SPOILER……
The ending REALLY ticked me off! It completely invalidated the statement that this movie was a fairy tale for adults. It completely killed what fantasy there was, because it proved that the magic was, in fact, the child’s delusion. I would have been a lot happier if it was at least left open ended so that the audience could decide whether or not the fantasy was real.
On the whole, I wouldn’t say it was a bad movie, but I don’t think it was everything all the critics are making it out to be. It was okay.

-J R R TolkienJanuary 24, 2007 at 6:44 am #529022All in all, that’s pretty much the way I felt about it too (obviously, as I repeated the same points above ad infinitum ;). I totally agree; violence? OK. Gratuitousness? Not at all! Sensationalistic nonsense!
I was admittedly disappointed as well. Still enjoyed it, but just expected more… brilliance. I personally felt the ending left it maybe a little open, as it’s not firmly stated that the child was delusional, but perhaps gifted with ‘sight’ that the adults lacked. Who knows? I thought the ending itself, after all that lead-up to something grand, just kinda fell flat on its face. So rushed and haphazardly tossed out there.
You should see the vehemence aimed at those who don’t positively love the movie 100% and laud it’s supposed film-making genious. I mean yeah, it’s different and intriguing but… I think the bar has been so significantly lowered over the years that it’s not hard to garner that kind of praise for an even mediocre effort at something different.
