I painted the first few I did black, because I just think it looks nicer and more proffesional than to leave the edges all messy…but now I just paint in the stamp and not the rest because I was having a real problem with getting the paint on bits I didn’t want it instead of just the bottom. Is there a way to apply paint to the bottom without getting any brush-over onto the rest of the piece??

-J R R TolkienFebruary 20, 2007 at 3:45 am #541822I paint the bottoms…I think on the first one or two I didn’t….but now I do….and I usually do it last…with the lightest color of the piece I did….
on the one Anthony did…I peeled off the felt pad….painted it…then put the felt pad back on…
for some reason, to me, it’s just not finished if the bottom is not painted….but I don’t worry about getting that part done perfectly…as long as I don’t mess up the other colors….
February 20, 2007 at 4:03 am #541823Huh. I haven’t painted the bottoms on mine but now that you bring this up, Arlla, I guess I’m going to start doing so. I don’t think the PYO can look sloppy if the bottom isn’t painted though – after all, that’s not a regular display side.
February 20, 2007 at 4:56 am #541824i always paint the bottoms on mine, it looks ALOT neater. as for getting the paint on the side of the piece, i do the bottom AFTER i’ve sealed the rest of the piece, so if i go a hair over, i can catch it with either a paper towel or damp paint brush.:) doesn’t stick too well or quickly to the sealed surface! as for painting the bottom, i paint 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch in from the edge, just to where i think the felt would go to, then leave the rest bare material for maximum stickability for the felt. no good sticking it to a totally painted bottom, as it will only stick as good as the paint sticks to the piece ya know? yank the felt and it will pull off ,bringing the whole painted bottom with it! ha ha! in theory anyway! finishing the bottom in my opinion conveys a more professional, “finished” piece and its nice n tidy. 🙂
February 20, 2007 at 4:58 am #541825I paint the bottoms, but then they just get rubs all over ’em. Now it kind of sways with my mood =)

I also clear coat the bottom before applying the felt.February 20, 2007 at 6:56 am #541827I paint them when I do the first coat, then a touch up at the end when I am done.
February 20, 2007 at 10:01 am #541828Yeah, I paint the bottoms, too. I didnt on the first ones I did, but now I do. They look MUCH better. I just paint a color the same as the one I use near the bottom, so if I get sloppy then it does not show.
February 21, 2007 at 4:53 am #541829I didn’t paint the bottoms on the first 2 I did. Now I do, I agree it looks nicer. On the Ki-Rin I even painted Melody’s copyright and the stamp on the bottom a different color so they would stand out.
February 21, 2007 at 11:46 am #541830I painted the bottom of my Griffin as I painted the whole piece (as opposed to going back later to address the issue of bottom-paint) although the lion half of my griff is one solid color, even if your PYO had multiple layers and dimention, I would imagine painting one half of the animal at a time(so you could hold the top, which would be dry/un painted), and include the bottom in the painting process.

I never thought bout it that way….DUH (on my part) 😆 …thanks for the info! 😉 😀
February 24, 2007 at 10:05 pm #541832I painted the bottom on the kirin I did today. You-re right, tf, it looks much better. Thanks for bringing the subject up, Arlla.
