Ok…last night I’m in the floor playing with the dog. We’re throwing a squeaky cheeseburger and then wrestling it back from Shadow to throw again. The cats are on the stairs..behind the armchair…you know how cats are..out of the way, they dont want trampled. But, when I lean over the dog’s shoulders to take the burger, he lets out a play growl…which he’s not done before much. I wasnt the least bit frightened, I could tell he was playing, and getting excited. However….the cats thought he was threatening me, that is when things went bad. Apparently they dont like their mommy threatened. Kashka launches herself from behind the recliner and attaches herself to the dogs rump. Shadow feels something painful on his butt and launches himself out from under me, cat still attached. As he makes a run for it, the other three cats follow Kash’s lead. Cosmo starts slashing at Shadow’s butt, Lydia beside him…and Andromida comes at his face as he’s turning…still making a run for it but panicking because he has no room to flee. After getting smacked in the face…he grabs the only cat he can get a lock on…Andromida, but lets her go quickly, to continue trying to flee in our little house. As Shadow rockets past Chris, he grabs Shadow’s collar and I throw myself over the dog, and make the cats back off. Shadow hid behind us for the rest of the evening, while the cats watched diligently from the stairs…in case he should growl at mommy again. Thankfully nobody was seriously hurt, although Shadow was jumpy for the rest of the evening, while the cats kept a close eye on him. Poor dog.
I never ever ever would have thought the cats could behave that way….against a BIG dog no less….I’m still shocked over it

May 22, 2008 at 11:27 am #706144Oh my. I’m glad no-one was hurt. I couldn’t help but laugh at the description though. I’ve seen cats attack threatening things before. Just like I’ve seen dogs attack. It sure is surprising when they do it.
May 22, 2008 at 11:29 am #706145it was just…they turned into a little…pack…or something. I guess like a teeny pride of lions..they were gonna take him down. π― π― π― it happened so fast too… π―
May 22, 2008 at 12:26 pm #706146Cats are very quick! They can take down big dogs. I think it’s just sweet how they decided to defend you. Poor dog, though. I guess you’ll have to play with him outside!

While hiding somewhere in my head I'm on the lookout for white oriental dragons! Please let me know if you know of any available. Thank you!
May 22, 2008 at 2:03 pm #706148I hope the dog is ok! And you too! Although it is kind of neat to know that your cats would protect you like that! I don’t think i’ve ever heard of a cat protecting their person from a dog!
May 22, 2008 at 3:08 pm #706149Poor Shadow π― Hope things aren’t quite so tense today…. It’s amazing how quickly situations can turn. My gram’pa always used to say that all it took was a stray growl and a back leg scratch to turn a nice sociable sniffing into a pack fight…. π π π

May 22, 2008 at 3:55 pm #706150Shadow and all the cats are fine thankfully…I checked them all over and there doesnt seem to be any major damage to anyone…just Shadow’s nerves…lol. The cats are back to normal, but Shadow is keeping his distance today, I dont blame him! π
May 22, 2008 at 3:57 pm #706151Well, at least you know that if you were ever in danger there’s a good chance the cats might protect you! π
May 22, 2008 at 4:24 pm #706152Woah! I can imagine what it would have been like in your shoes! I am so glad There was no serious harm done! (except for your poor doggy’s nerves!)
May 22, 2008 at 5:24 pm #706153Yep Cats can be pretty protective, and territorial π
My daughters dog was in the house and went upstairs to see her. Her cat went charging up the stairs and into the room where he attacked the dog and chased him out of her room, down the stairs and around the house until we opened the door so he could run out! π
When we let the dog in everything is fine as long as he doesn’t try to go in her room. My Dog (Alf) can but he was raised in the house with the cats πMay 22, 2008 at 5:30 pm #706154lol..they were like little lions…..taking on such a big animal…even if he is a giant chicken. makes me proud to be purplecat! lol. π
May 22, 2008 at 5:32 pm #706155I didn’t know cats were that protective either! π― Dogs, yes, cats, no. At least no damage was done, and I agree with dragonmedley: play outside with Shadow. π
