That’s a great idea! No images or links until X amount of posts.
In addition, you could include a picture captcha. Ex: signup displays 20 pictures, and asks you to put a check next to all the pictures of cats. This works against automated bots, as does the question captcha (person must correctly answer a simple question, like “what is 7 minus 5”).Didn’t it used to be that way? I think I remember telling newbies once upon a time that they had to make five posts before they could post pictures or links.
I seem to remember something like that to from when I first joined the forum.

Our current problem is that the code that runs the forum is out of date- pretty seriously out of date- and we can’t fix or upgrade it until Windstone migrates their servers to a new co-location as the current one is… not good. The current forum code is messed up and it cannot be upgraded until it is manually fixed. I think we have the ball rolling on this now as I’ve been in discussion with John and Snap so it’s just a matter of me kicking spammer butt until we can get things moved, upgraded, and runnin’ smooooothly once again. 🙂

I signed up here way back when the foum had only just started, and I couldn’t remember there being anything special to the signup process.August 27, 2010 at 4:35 pm #825040There is always the risk of turning away legit members but I was checking this forum out for a little bit before I registered. I had bought my first Windstone and fell in love with it before realizing there was a forum. Not being able to post pictures and links for a while would not have turned me away! You just note why the wait and most reasonable people understand. Then you’ve got to check these posts to make sure they actually say something and not post an emoticon or just say ‘Hi’. A lot of work but unfortunately, it has to be done. Don’t like seeing these spammers myself! 👿
