Wow, what a beautiful animal! It’s great that you’re giving her new home; kinda sad that a vet’s employee would abandon an animal like that.
April 8, 2009 at 9:35 am #759385She looks kind of orange in those photos. I thought orange was an ok color for an iguana till I took him to the vet and they told me it was a sign of renal failure and the blood test confirmed it. I don’t know about them being bad tempered, mine was a sweetie and didn’t mind anything you did to him. The only time he ever slapped anyone with his tail was if you frightened him.
April 8, 2009 at 3:14 pm #759386Iguanas are a ton of work and can be expensive to keep (heck just an enclosure for a 6′ long male is enough to set you back for a few months, even if you build it yourselves like I did). I was constantly at the grocery store getting the fresh veggies my Sam needed. He was great to have out but let me tell you, when they let loose a poo you know it, and it is not easy to clean up. Not to mention they carry salmonella as part of their native bacterial fauna, which means washing everything they’ve been on well and keeping them well out of the kitchen, and always washing your hands!
I really think that unless you have a large area to dedicate to these guys, and a good wad of cash in your pocket to invest in the special lights/heats/space requirements these guys need, that it’s best only to keep them if you live in a climate where they can be in an outdoor enclosure much of the year (TX, Flordia, CA, etc) because nothing beats real sunlight hitting them, and they absolutely must be able to absorb the right amount of UVB or they will suffer. I live in the northeast and let me tell you, it was work and expensive to care for my iguana properly. Koishii’s got the right idea with her lady iguana! Outside in the warmth and sun is best for them. πVolunteer mod- I'm here to help! Email me for the best response: nambroth at gmail.com
My art: featherdust.comApril 8, 2009 at 6:45 pm #759387My brother had an iguanna named Precious, It was almost all white and black, hardly any green, and was about 6 feet long with it’s tail! She was a biggun!
I remember them eating lettuce, cabbage and other veggies. I think they ate meal worms once in a while too as a treat. We had a big cage with that astroturf immitation grass stuff and a cat litter box full of water with heat rocks and lights….. They like to climb too, so find some branches and fun stuff and it will probably climb around. That’s about all I know.
I can’t believe someone who worked for a vet could do such a thing. People like that shouldn’t be working with animals! :nea:

While we definately have the space and my dad’s job would allow us to financially support keeping the animal, I already have a lot of cats and two birds I devote my time to. I am not one of those people that get a pet and just clean their messes and feed them(although my family help out with that a lot) I also devote a lot of time to socializing with them.
After a lot of talking with my parents, we are deciding that it is something we could do. I am willing to spend the time with the animal and research is easy for me to make sure I know what is needed. Being at Dawns gave me an introduction to basic reptile care.
We have this giant sunroom that is perfect and we already were planning to build a set up for her so she can have a place to go and bask. That way she not only would have a safe place with a uvb and heat lamp, but she can get evening sun to bask in. We actualy have a lot of spare wood I can use to make one.
unfortunately we have run into a snag, and really, we all kinda knew it was the most likely thing that had happened. From the photos you can tell she is brown orange…and we began to have a feeling that that was not her normal coloring, along with the lady telling us it ate cat food…it was outside in the cold for a week, AND from what we know, it did not have a UVB light… so we assumed that most likely the fellow had some health troubles. Well we took her to the vet and it was the same vet that the previouse owners took her too(also a vet we have gone to when trying to save a sick scrub jay once), and this was good because then we would have her medical history. Come to find out that her medic history is not that good. Last time she was seen because her jaw shows signs of a calcium deficiency, the vet said her blood work was troubling. off the top of my head I can not remember the details of what was said, something about a pospherouse build up in the previous blood work. the family was supposed to bring her back a week later for another check up after getting some shots…and never came back. That was back in December.
He was worried about her coloring, and we told him the story of rescuing her..so he is cutting us a deal. Right now she is at the vet. He is going to feed her and give her some vitamins, in case she is clogged, and he is going to run blood work on her. He was honest that there is a chance that she may not be able to recover from what has happened to her nutrition wise. We will pick her up this evening and tomorrow we will have blood test results.
Mom is a bit pissed. She has a hard time with that they saw the vet and continued to do nothing for the reptile…even if it was a case where the parents felt it was the son’s responsibility. At the least they could have offered her up then to a reptile house or some where that would have taken care of her.(it is sad that even then, some animals still do not get the care they need).
So now we have new things to consider. If she does have health problems, is THAT something real really will be able to take care of? I’ll be talking more with my parents when we find out her situation. One thing is for sure, If she is able to make it and we are not able to take care of her, we won’t pass her off to just any one that “says” they know how and can take care of her. We will do out best to get her to some one or people that can give her what she needs.
It is sad. she is very sweet, although I suspect some of it may be because she is not feeling very well. All my family seem to have instantly gotten attached to the reptile. The Petco people said if the reptile dies we can bring back the lamps we baught in 30 days and get a refund.
April 8, 2009 at 7:04 pm #759389I hope she pulls through for you guys. π
April 8, 2009 at 7:11 pm #759390good luck
April 8, 2009 at 7:16 pm #759391we’ve been doing extensive research into iguana care, each of us, for the prospect of taking on the reptile…and the more mom reads about the care needed compared to what we were told by the owner…..oh, both her and my sister are currently pretty pissed.
April 8, 2009 at 7:20 pm #759392I would get pissed too, people should know what their getting into when they get a pet, at least you took her in, I sure hope she recovers
April 8, 2009 at 8:08 pm #759393I hope she gets better. But you guys get a lot of kudos for taking her in, even if it is just for the last little bit.

Sun Dragon Koi #3April 8, 2009 at 10:11 pm #759394Koishii, I’m sorry! I was going to comment on the jaw but I really couldn’t tell form the photos. That’s always the worst part about taking in a rescue (I know this from experience with parrots)… rescues are the ones that NEED us the most, but usually cost us the most too because they are carrying health problems from neglect or ignorance from previous owners. π
I hope for the best!

Isn’t that the truth! I see this all too often, and saw it even more when I worked in pet stores. There is so much misinformation out there, or people saying ‘it’s easy’… when it’s not! The saddest are the ones I call ‘throwaway’ pets… inexpensive pets that people won’t bother to care for properly, because if it dies it’s no big deal and they can just buy a replacement. Sadly a lot of the more common reptiles, birds, small animals such as rats and hamsters, little turtles, and even things like hermit crabs fall victim to this far too often. π
I’m so sorry your family was misled on the care of the iguana. π

oh and the iguana’s name is zoey π i will be getting her a tank and stuff wooo new pet
Holy cow, what a dirt bag. That doesnt seem like something a vet would/should do. Im sorry about the medical problems. What a bummer for you and that poor lizard. Some folks just want a pet because they look cool. Its unfortunate when they dont want the responsibility along with the coolness. π

A lady had two dogs tied behind a garage. One was almost dead and had died of starvation as soon as they got it to the vet, and the other was extremely emaciated. The lady said it wasnt her fault because her 14 year old son was the one who owned the dogs. She is the one who said he could have them and they were kept at her house. He is HER son and what is HIS responsibility is HER responsibility. I HATE people like that… guess thats why I want to be an Animal Cop. I hope to rescue pets like this.
