😮 😮 What?! She works at a vet and abandoned the iguana?! Ack! I would call the vet and tell him/her. I wouldn’t want anyone working for me who abandoned an animal outside like that.
But kudos to you for giving Zoey a new home. You might try
http://www.baskingspot.com/ – they have links to sites with info about caring properly for an iguana. I don’t know a lot myself but I do know they say that 95% of iguana medicine is basic husbandry. Good luck!April 7, 2009 at 11:51 pm #759377I used to feed my iguana kale, collard greens, cherry tomatoes, grapes, things like that. Make sure you don’t give them dog or cat food since it will kill their kidneys. The previous owners of my iguana didn’t know that so by the time I got him had renal failure and I had to put him to sleep. Make sure they have plenty of water and a UVB light. My iguana was over 4 foot long so he pretty much roamed my house and went in his aquarium for feedings and if he was cold I had a ceramic heat lamp there. He was paper trained so he didn’t have too many accidents. I would also soak him in the bath tub from time to time. Since his kidneys didn’t function properly I had to do this to help him stay hydrated.
April 8, 2009 at 12:33 am #759378I think iguanas are so cool! Yay for rescuing him and congrats on the new company.
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

That iguana will get to be about 6 feet long once he’s full grown and would do best at that point with a very large enclosure. Most of these critters end up abandoned, euthanized or donated to zoos because the owners don’t or can’t properly care for them. They’re known to be foul tempered and have a pretty mean lash with that tail!
IIRC they’re pretty strict herbivores, spinach, fruits, romaine lettuce, etc.
Here’s a greenie site with lots of info: http://www.greenigsociety.org/careinfo.htm
April 8, 2009 at 3:04 am #759380We are used to wild reptiles more then anything. Small dinky lizerds and snakes..and even then we did a catch and release thing.
The lady says he escaped out her doggy door and since her son has not been taking care of it any more, they do not really want it back. They were going to give it to a reptile house.
I am pretty aware of how snarky they can be from reading and I still am not sure if we will be able to keep her. Since I do not have a job, i can give her a lot of time. My dad had a friend that owned one and he fell in love with her instantly, my mom really likes her too. I think way are going to take a good stab at keeping her. Quite possibly we will be building a basking/reptile house of sorts for her in out sun room this weekend.
She seems to love being petted. She leans into your hand when you stroke her sides, just like a cat. Tomorow we have a vet apointment for her to get her checked out. My parents are very nice in flipping the cost for all this.
We just got her a basking lamp and a UV(???) lamp, and since she was outside almost all day(and possibly over the last week) I set the heat lamp up and she seems to be thoroughly enjoying it.
I admit I squeeled when I heard my sister brought home a big reptile. I hope we can manage taking care of her. We already have a pride of cats and two budgies, what’s one more lizard? All the cats are freaked out by the new smell and this BIG lizard.
here is a photo of her:
April 8, 2009 at 3:37 am #759381All I know about taking care of reptiles is what I’ve read from books or what my friend who has snakes told me, stuff like they need a heat source they can’t get too close to so they don’t burn themselves and they need a proper UV light or their bones will lose strength and “crumble” @_@
Goodluck!! I haven’t wanted an iguana since a pet store let me hold a young one and I got a nice slice down my arm from his/her tail, at least with cats I can see the pointy parts coming at me! LOL
April 8, 2009 at 4:21 am #759382I’m so glad you are giving it a good home; that’s terrible that someone would just abandon it outside 😡 But wow, they can grow up to 4 to 6 feet? That’s huge! Good luck!
