I was wondering if anyone one who has an Old warrior could help me out with this. My OW EmPea has a severe case of “rough scales” it’s in the area where his wings are joined, but only the wings themselves, his backbone is smooth. It’s a visible colour/texture difference(Jade spot in picture).
I was cleaning him recently and it causes the cloth to snag and stick to him when damp. I just want to know if this is a common thing on the OWs or not.
Thanks

This is because this area is very hard to get spray into (or paintbrushes for those of us that do that type of painting), and it settles in a rough pattern, especially when clear-coating. The amount of roughness in this area varies depending on who applied the spray, the temperature, the amount of clear coat added, and the humidity the day the clearcoat was applied.
I usually use compressed air (a can of air works too) to blow dust out of these areas as cleaning cloths don’t work real well.

My art: featherdust.comOctober 21, 2009 at 4:17 am #787897My ruby lap dragon had the same thing and before I knew not to try and wipe that area I wiped some of her paint off 😥 not too much but it was still sad and now I’m leery of keeping my pieces out where they will get dusty and need to be cleaned. But to answer your questions my lap dragons and Ow’s have that also and it’s best not to wipe that area in particular
October 21, 2009 at 6:06 am #787898Yeah, both my Lap and my OWs have those rough sections. Three solutions: Don’t dust, keep them behind glass, or run them veeeery carefully under water. I split my pieces between the first two.

The Ruby dragons are a bit of a special case. The paint on some of them is not as durable as the rest of the Windstone line, which is why you may have gotten some paint to lift off. Other Windstone colors should not do this. 🙂

I’d add dusting with forced air to that. It works great and won’t harm the piece.
Also want to reiterate that the ‘official’ stance on cleaning Windstones is to avoid getting them wet if at all possible.

My art: featherdust.comOctober 21, 2009 at 3:38 pm #787900I can’t seem to get the dust out of the grooves in mine with the canned air. Keep meaning to get a paintbrush to see if I can brush it off that way as I can’t get a cloth to get it out of the grooves either 😥
October 21, 2009 at 3:53 pm #787901Yikes! I’d never put one of my windstones under water 😮 . If they have the slightest chip in the sealant, the water can be absorbed by the exposed gypsum and can cause the paint to flake. I used compressed air for the tight corners and a damp q-tip to clean the toughest spots. A brush with medium stiffness works well to push away hard to get at dust.
As for those ‘icky spots’ , even the Male dragons can have them. My Pearly Pink Lap dragon is actually pretty rough on her underside as well.October 21, 2009 at 6:30 pm #787902If I get an ebay piece that’s really dusty I use a damp q-tip first and if that doesn’t work I move up to a soft tooth brush. If I get a piece with no dust on it I try to keep it in my glass case, they are definitly worth the investment and they look nice to 🙂 . I did figure the ruby paint had something to do with why the paint lifted off. It was a warm day when I tried cleaning her and my cloth was damp since I didnt know at the time about the unstable paint condition. It at least happened on the underside of her neck so I can’t see it unless I look for it, but i’ll never be cleaning her again, she is locked up in her glass case or in her cardboard box if she’s not in the case 😀 I think some of the older scratchers have that roughness as well but i just felt my RF scratcher and he is smooth.
October 21, 2009 at 8:45 pm #787903I like a soft artist’s paintbrush, a little water, a paper towel, and a very soft cloth. I put the brush in the water and wipe off most of the moisture on the paper towel, and use the slightly damp brush to get the settled dust out of the nooks and crannies. Then I give it a little buff with the cloth. It works like magic 🙂
October 21, 2009 at 10:09 pm #787904With a really dusty piece , I will get really watered down black paint and just antique the area over again. It works great 🙂
