I have 5 PYO unicorns that I want to strip and repaint .
I really don’t want to do it in my tiny apartment . I have no place else to do it . New PYO unicorns won’t be made until new horns can be made .
Ok I have to ask , any very unlikely chance I could get PYO unicorns with no horns and remove the horns off my repaints and have a brand new unpainted unicorn .

Silly I know , but I can’t find any blank PYO unicorns .

I wouldn’t try it, the horns are much too easy to break. I need to get to work on the horn situation.

I’m with John,even if the horns came out without being damaged, the unicorns themselves most likely would be.

I’ve pulled horns out of PYO unicorns before, but the tang on the horn almost always breaks off in the process, making it useless. When we need to salvage a PYO unicorn horn, we smash the unicorn with a hammer. You have to pulverize the head until all the plaster is broken away from the horn.

I’ve also heard that acetone will soften the plaster, so it might be possible to soak the area around the horn with acetone and pull the horn out that way. Acetone might also damage the horn though.

Acetone will damage the plaster, no question. But I’ve pulled several horns without breaking them. If you’re careful, go REALLY slowly, and understand the risk and that you’ll probably do a tiny bit of damage, it is possible. There was a thread about it… Let’s see if I can put my money where my mouth is on that Advanced Search function.

Interesting that you guys say acetone will damage the sculpture, I have stripped an old PYO completely using acetone straight, even soaking the entire piece in it & it didn’t hurt the plaster one bit. Killed the paint though, which was the point. 😉 That said though, you have to be willing to risk damaging it if you go that route, I really wanted that paint off, & I knew if I killed it, I could get another.

I’ve used acetone for stripping paint as well and have had no problem with it hurting the plaster. It works with the glue as well. But as mentioned, it WILL kill the paint job.
