Wow, there are some positively awful companies out there and they are ALLOWED to behave in this fashion. It’s so unethical IMO.
Oh, yeah. Not just companies, but smaller businesses too. One of my good friends works at a gas station and they are forcing her to pull a 6 am. to 4 pm. shift tomorrow, and they “do not allow lunch breaks.” They don’t allow any food behind the counter, either, and yet they don’t give them half an hour to eat, for goodness’ sake! They are allowed a five minute break after every two hours that they work, which apparently makes the whole thing legal as pie. The economy in this town is terrible or she would quit.
Cheryl, I hope you get the heck out of that place as soon as you can! Maybe you could take a month or two off before getting another job… you know, just to unwind from the unreasonable stress they put on you and play with your little boy? π
August 29, 2007 at 6:05 pm #612699Oh! that’s some news…I’m so glad your son is through the worst of it and will be fine.
Your job sure does suck, but the next few months will fly by…Labor Day, the first day of school, Halloween and fall festivals, Thanksgiving, Christmas/Chanukkah or whatever you celebrate, New Year’s Eve…
Just keep your chin up and focus on what’s important – your family…lots of good thoughts going out to you: -)
August 29, 2007 at 6:07 pm #612700I am so glad Kyle is doing better. That must have been truly awful for you and your husband – I can’t even imagine how bad the stress and anxiety was.
Your company defies words I can use on a forum with young people! All I can say is that I hope karma comes back and bites them on their collective buttockal areas!
August 29, 2007 at 6:12 pm #612701I’m so glad Kyle is doing well! I hope you are able to find a better job when the time comes.
August 29, 2007 at 6:47 pm #612702I can relate to you about work. My previous job used the FMLA and my pregnancy against me.
I was 3 months pregnant, when my doctor restricted my lifting to 35 lbs. Not unreasonable, and not really an issue, we never lifted that much in my job anyway. However, my Job Description said I had to be able to lift 50 lbs. So the plant manager said I couldn’t work until my doctor cleared me to lift 50 lbs. And escorted me from the building.
At that point they had broken the law and were guilty of pregnancy discrimination. Apparently they figured that out, the next day they called me up and said they were putting me on FMLA, even though I had only been with the company 5 months and technically I didn’t qualify for FMLA. But the moment they offered that, they were off the hook. But I was still jobless and without income and obviously 3 mos pregnant, so getting a new job was in the realm of impossible.
So basically I was fired for being pregnant. Nice, huh? You’d think in this day and age that that couldn’t happen, but it does all the time here.
The company I work for now is really great, through the 2-week thumb abcess incident and the 4 days in the hospital with my 14 month old, only 3 weeks later, they were stellar. Worked with me and made sure my job was there when everything healed, etc. We also have about 6 gals there that are in various stages of pregnancy, not one has lost her job, amazing.
I think I like working for an employee owned company.

August 29, 2007 at 7:21 pm #612703OMG I had the pregnancy discrimination against me too when I was pregnant with Kyle- I started a job at 5 mos pregnant, they didn’t know it and 2 weeks before benefits began they fired me for something that was made up.
BTW it is amazingly easy to just make a lie up about someone and management can fire the person the lie is about- they don’t even need proof these days! It’s really really despicable how much employers get away with!

Yes Ski, it’s very true, don’t join us- though we’d love to have you we don’t want you to have to deal with this crud. Corporate America is like the plague on morality and it’s winning.
August 29, 2007 at 9:08 pm #612706Sorry Cheryl, I’m getting to this a bit late since I was at work. I’m glad to hear Kyle is okay…that’s the most important thing. Look for another job as soon as you feel comfortable doing so. I’m sure there’s something much better waiting for you.
August 29, 2007 at 9:37 pm #612707I’m glad that your little guy is doing better

August 30, 2007 at 1:14 am #612709Best of luck on EVERYTHING. I know what you mean about bad companies. Here they expect you to learn something with a 20 minute over view then they thow you in. When my grandma passed away in May 06 and my mom in April 07 I only got 3 days for wach of them and they had to be taken together. I have given money for births and deaths in the office too manytime sto mention but when it was my turn NOTHING. I wish i coudl find another job also but I’m stuck for a cople more winters at least
I’m glad to hear Kyle is doing MUCH better

They did this to me 1 week before my health benefits started, and 2 days before Thanksgiving. Nice, huh? I didn’t feel that the excuse they used to fire me had as much to do with the lifting restriction as the fact that my insurance bennies were about to kick in. On top of that, the company rule for holidays was you had to work the day before and the day after to get your holiday pay, so they screwed me over about 3 times all at once.
Also since they didn’t technically fire me, I had to wait a week for my paycheck too.

haha, I like that saying.
Cheryl….I was so sad when I read about your son. I am so glad he is doing better and that you caught it. I think it sucks what your work is trying to pull, but I guess it is kinda good that they let you borrow vacation time. It is too bad that you are stuck there until you can switch. Does your husband’s company have a job that you could do? I do hope you get it all worked out. Sending warm fuzzies your way.
