So, I lost Dara, one of  my beautiful Boerboels the beginning of January.  I have been looking for another to help my heart heal and to give Svayaa, my 14 month old Boerboel puppy a playmate since then. I have  registered with several large breed rescue centers across the US waiting for a compatible one that will get along with Svayaa and my cats to become available. But so far, either they have been dog or cat aggressive.

So I was looking thru the pages of a rescue in AZ and found a young Cane Corso puppy. They call her Lulu. I get to drive to AZ tonight to bring her home. I am sooo excited. I am going to rename her Kieva. It means of joy of life and happiness. I think she deserves that.

Lulu/Kieva, who is only 7.5 months old now has had a pretty rough life. From what I was told, she was found wandering in southern California with a broken elbow at about 4 months of age. So the animal control there picked her up, but didn’t have the funds to fix the elbow. So somehow the rescue in AZ heard about her and drove to CA to get her. They took her to a few specialists who all said that the leg needed to be amputated. But her first foster mom told the AZ rescue board members that Lulu/Kieva was trying to use the leg and to give her a chance to heal. Apparently Kieva is trying to use the leg more and more each day and is playing with her foster siblings very well. But according to the vets she may still end up needing the leg amputated at some point. So the rescue really wasn’t expecting to find the pup a home. But I saw her sweet face and her soulful eyes and am going to give her a home and do my best to support her so she can heal the leg as much as possible.

Sure wasn’t in my plans to find a dog that was going to need so much help. I do have a vet tech and ranching background so I hope she will do great. I get to pick her up at 9AM tomorrow morning after a  9.5  hour drive down to get her. Then she will get a nice long drive back to my place. Svayaa gets to go with us as well so we can do introductions before loading them into the jeep. I think a 10 hour drive should be a good way to help them get to know each other calmly. Leaving here at 11PM tonight, gonna be a long 20 hour day, but I think a very worthwhile one.

I just wish people would at least take animals they didn’t want or couldn’t afford proper care for to a shelter rather than dumping them and leaving them in pain to wander until someone manages to find them!

Here is a picture of her rescue page. I will post more photos once I get back home and she settles in.

She’s gorgeous! Those soulful eyes. I don’t blame you for falling in love with her picture.

I just got my first official foster dog yesterdaywe are now an approved foster home for a local rescue. She was also from a rescue in California. I’m probably only going to have her for a week because they already have a home in mind for her here in Canada but I might be getting a young female with a litter of puppies soon. My 3 other dogs are getting use to her.

Oh that poor puppy!  I hope her leg gets better!  That is great you are adopting her!  MWe are in Canada but my mom helps find fosters and transport for dogs in high kill shelters in the US and even though we can’t have our own dog here, just cats, she has helped save some they were going to put down in the US.

Looking for rainbow or pink & teal grab bags!

              Thank you everyone!

We made it home and everything is going great. She is such a sweet heart. I have to hand it to both of her foster mom’s, they did a fantastic job of teaching her how to behave politely and yet still letting her be a puppy. She is incredibly well adjusted, especially considering all she has been thru in her young life.

She is using her leg much more than I expected, running and wrestling with Svayaa. Although the right elbow was completely shattered, they had to let the bone fuse that way because the injury was already over 70 hours old when she was found. The way it is, she may end up with severe arthritis to the point that she wont be able to use the leg someday. So a future amputation is always going to be a possibility on the books for her unless we are very lucky.  Here is an x-ray that shows the difference in her elbows.

Marianne, It is wonderful that you are fostering dogs! I know it is not easy to take them in, care for them, teach them the manners they may need in their new home and then need to let them go. Congratulations on your first foster.

Kim, It is great what you mom does as well. I know it ended up being over a 25 hour day for us by time we drove down to Phoenix, spent 2 hours introducing Svayaa and Kieva and then getting them back home. It was long, hot and exhausting. But it was worth it.

Having said that. I told the rescue that one of the pups they have in a litter, if they don’t find a home for I’d be willing to take him as well. Although they did say that they had a waiting list already for that litter. But I know I practically begged them to meet me somewhere closer to me, even if just a couple of hours so that I didn’t have to drive quite that far again. So finding someone to help with transports is such a vital thing in rescue situations.

Thank you all again. Kieva is a wonderful playful puppy and I love her dearly already!

Here are some of the pics of Kieva (Lulu) again and some of the newest pup Brinn (Lola) I went back and rescued 2 weeks ago.

And Brinn who was part of mommas unexpected party night litter that the owners were not able to care for. She was 9 weeks old when I got her and is growing like a weed.

Thanks everyone. They are a handful but they seem to be adjusting well. They are having to adjust to a new kitten I found wandering on the railroad tracks last week too. So far he thinks he is a dog and that he gets to run the place. lol
