You’ve probably heard this before, but I’ll add my input. A friend and I were talking the other day and thought some new positions for our old favorites would be cool. Maybe redo the Male dragon so he’s in a curled position that would fit around the Mother dragon. Also redo the Mother Dragon so she’s laying down like normal but with her head raised. The Male could be rearing up on his hind legs and the Mother could be sitting up or standing on all 4 legs, the Male could be done standing too. You’ve already done something like this with the Spectral Dragon & Rising Spectral Dragon. This way, we all will have a good excuse to spend lots of $$$ LOL.

      Thanks for listening.

That’s a nice idea. It might turn out really interesting.

I would love to eventually see a standing dragon of some kind. Like on all fours, but I’m sure breakage on the legs or even the tail would be an issue. *has flash backs of broken Grand Unicorns*

Oh, is this why most if not all of the statues are posed in a way so as not to separate the legs too far from the body? This makes a lot of sense. How does this impact the imperials, though? They seem like they’re standing with their legs separated; is breakage usually an issue for them?

I’m sure a lot more then that comes into the overall. I mean, they have to be somewhat easy to paint with an airbrush as well. A ton of “underbelly” work may not be a good idea either if you want a quick turn around on product.

Those would be very cool, but can see how turn around and breakage issues may be a problem. Nice mental image though! 🙂

Long Legs don’t do well when cast in gypsum, unless they are on a base. I try to keep everything like legs, tails etc. bundled up in a blob shape to avoid breakage as much as possible. The other problem is , whenever there is a parting line in the mold, like under the Oriental dragons’s belly, or between front legs of the foo dogs, it adds time to casting them. The seam lines need to be scraped out very carefully, and details added back.
The Emperor dragon only has an opening under the wing web where it is easy to scrape and doesn’t show much.

Sorry I took a while to respond! Computer issues.

I wish there was an easy way to do this. I actually considered making a flexible dragon sculpture that had an armature, like a stop motion creature, that we could just reposition and cast to make new dragons.

This is what digital 3d modeling would be good for.

I have tried re-positioning existing sculptures. I did this with the Sun dragon, to make the Moon dragon, and I did this with the Male and female foo dogs. You’d think that this would save a lot of sculpting time, but it is nearly as much work as doing a whole new sculpture! If a dragon is in even a slightly different position, his entire scale pattern needs to be changed, stretched or bunched up differently to fit the pose. I ended up re-carving more than half of the Moon dragon’s scales when I re-positioned her. The advantage is the second sculpture will closely match the original one, if that was the goal.

I could build a new dragon using the existing heads, but it is easier to just sculpt a new head too, while I am at it!
