*performs thread necromancy, bringing this topic back from the dead!*
I have a picture of my kitty!
Also, I just got the answer to the question of “was Tari ever fixed,” in that she went into heat yesterday. Fortunately she’s not too vocal, and isn’t marking, just rubbing up against everying and then crouching on the floor with her butt in the air, waiting for Prince Charming.
It also seems she’s a little uncertain about Kali’s gender (or maybe I’ve got a bi or lesbian cat?) because she made a couple of attempts to get Kali to notice that she’s in the mood. It’s rather hilarious! Usually Kali’s the one stalking Tari and pestering her, and then Tari approached Kali, and I think was freaking her out a little. Kali hesitated, looking confused, made a lot of weird noises and then backed away VERY fast!
But then after that they decided to resume their cold war. I got a photo! I was taking pictures of the compressor and airbrush, and realized that both the cats were right there where I could snap a shot of ’em.

That’s pretty much their usual positions. Kali will lurk under a chair, or just outside a doorway, or somewhere else where she thinks she won’t be noticed, her tail twitching as she contemplates pouncing, and Tari will sit on the bed, or right next to it, so she can retreat under it at need. And then they just stare. They don’t really fight, though usually eventually Kali will try to pounce Tari, and then there’s hissing and posturing until somebody runs for it. But mostly it’s a cold war, glaring at eachother from opposite sides of the room.
(I’m way too easily amused.)

January 31, 2007 at 1:23 am #527828What a beautiful kittie!! We picked up a stray on the side of the road…long story. Female, young…went into heat. She was in constant heat for probably 2 months and then we got her fixed. My vet told me that females will just stay in heat until they get pregnant. I didnt know that, I thought it came and went…At the height the poor thing was ‘presenting’ everytime we even made a noise!
Her behavior was really similar to what you indicated! We kept her in the bathroom away from the other cats. She was really scared and would only let me near her. She went after my husband when he tried to pet her behind the toilet. Once she got more comfortable and was used to getting food she warmed right up. However, she was in the bathroom for a month. She is FIV positive so I got our other cats vacinated and finally after 4 weeks the whole clan could meet.
That was 2 years ago and now she is very happy and sleeps with us every night. All 3 cats are totally cool together. She even doesn’t mind the dog too much….
I’m glad you rescued a life!
January 31, 2007 at 1:30 am #527829Yeah. Tari is a little psycho, but she does seem to be calming down, and hopefully things will improve even more after she’s fixed!
January 31, 2007 at 2:23 am #527830She’s beautiful! How did you come up with the name Tari?
January 31, 2007 at 3:10 am #527831I’m glad the cats are getting along. I adopted two cats besides Danny and Romeo(this was a few years after I got the boys). I put the two females in my bedroom and my boys got the rest of the appartment. I couldn’t sleep in my bed, they were too hyper. I had to sleep on the couch. The 4 of them would have fights even with the door closed.
After 9 months of constant cat fights I caught the two females (I would have loved to keep Mocha she was a sweety, her sister Ameretto was horrible.) and took them to the shelter. I had tried to find them a good home but, couldn’t find one. I felt horrible about it. I tried and tried to get them to get along, nothing worked. I just hope they found good homes for them.
January 31, 2007 at 3:52 am #527832I did not know you could vaccinate cats against FIV. My 4 are all ok without anything at all. If they can do that for cats why can’t they do it for humans???

Well, her name is actually Elentári, but Tari is what she gets called pretty much all the time.
Kali was named after the Hindu goddess of death and destruction. I figured the name was appropriate, and the audible pun on Calico (because she is one) made the name doubly appropriate, really.
So I wanted to name the new cat something to do with goddesses. I looked at SO many goddess names, but none of them were right. They were all either impossible to pronounce, or else just not suitable for a cat. But eventually I went looking at Tolkien stuff, and Elentári is one of the Valar, the gods/godesses of Middle-Earth. And she was the goddess of the sun, which I liked because Tari looks a lot like a Birman, only without the white, and there’s a legend about Birmans and a sun goddess, whose power supposedly burned them the chocolate-pointed color they are.
So…. it’s kind of a weird association, but I liked it! And I’m kind of weird myself, if you hadn’t figured that out by now.
January 31, 2007 at 4:57 am #527834NO REALLY??? You are here aren’t you???
January 31, 2007 at 5:15 am #527835What a cute kitty. She’s really pretty, and her name fits.
January 31, 2007 at 3:05 pm #527836That’s awesome, SPark. It’s great that you have a story about how you came up with their names. I really hate when people just call their cats things like “Muffy” or “Blackie” or “Tiger.” It’s boring and I’m sure the cat hates it (ok, I’m not sure, but I would imagine it does).

That is funny. It is like they are blaming each other for something.
January 31, 2007 at 9:24 pm #527838They are both beautiful cats. I love the look on Kali’s face – it speaks volumes. 😆
January 31, 2007 at 9:41 pm #527839She is VERY expressive. She lets you know what she’s thinking.
