So I got my new cat today. She (or perhaps he, the person who was feeding her didn’t know, and I didn’t want to tramatize her by checking, and she’s quite small, so for now I assume female,) turned up as a stray outside a nail salon, whose owner likes cats, and was feeding her.
My boyfriend’s mother goes there for her nails, and knew I was looking for a second cat, and also knew I liked pointed longhairs, which this cat is, (she looks just like my birman flapcat, only fluffier, and without the white socks,) so she called me and let me know the cat needed a home.
I got a separate litter pan and food dish, and put them in my room so we can quarantine her, so she doesn’t give the cat I’ve already got something. She has a vet appointment tomorrow, so all that stuff is taken care of.
I’m just wondering if I’ve got a chronically shy cat or what? I’ve adopted a stray before, and he wasn’t afraid of me, and didn’t hide at all. When I got Kali, she spent a lot of time under the bed at first, and I know that’s normal, but after the first hour or so she was willing to come out for short explorations.
This cat is not. She found a tiny space in between the wall and a tub in my closet (I would have sworn a cat would not fit in that space, but she squeezed in,) and has been in there, without moving so much as an inch, for five hours now. She’ll let me touch her, her head sticks out, and makes no protest if I pet her, but she shows no interest at all in the kitty treat I brought for her. I’m starting to worry that there’s something wrong somehow, she’s staying so still! Though I’ve no idea of her age or her normal temperment, so this may be fine.
Anyhow, I have a new cat! I’m crossing my fingers and hoping she gets a clean bill of health tomorrow.
I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Usually you need to give a cat up to 2 days to adjust when it’s been normally socilized. If the little guy was feral then it could even take a week or longer. I’d venture to say after you get through with the vet she’ll most likely do the same theng when you bring her home tomorrow and possibly by nightfall will hopefully want a bite to eat. Though don’t be too surprised if she refuses food for a day or two. Sometimes they chow too and then go rigt back to their “safe spot” It all depends. If she was malnourished she may stuff herslef not knowing when the next meal will be. Since she will be stressed you should limit her food a little if she does that. You don’t want her anxiety to make her sick to her stomach. It’s very common until a kitten knows that you aren’t going to hurt her and she isn’t petrified of her surroundings. Stuffing herself into a small space is what babies do when there is a predator nearby. It’s the only way babies an survive is to go somewhere the predator can’t get at her. Who knows, Maybe she’s never been indoors before. You’re lucky to have saved her before the real cold weather moved in.

And we theorize that she’s not feral, just an abandoned pet. There’s an apartment complex right near where she was found, and she will let people handle her, which most ferals cats are totally unwilling to do.
Congrats!! How sweet!! Just ignore the cat for a while. It will come out and bug you for attention eventually. Probably when you are trying to paint or cook or do something else that requires total concentration.
He he he. Well, she’s moved from one crack to a different one! That’s some kind of progress. Also, she purred when I was petting her. Apparently she liked pettings.
But not tummy rubs! My boyfriend tried to touch her belly, he got clawed.
Good for you adopting a new kitty! I hope he/she gets a clean bill of health. Somebody dumped my boy Domino and he ended up in my backyard. After he came home from the vet, it took a month before he came out from under the bed for any length of time:-/ He’s still a nervous kitty at times, but a sweetheart. Best of luck to you!
Yes congrats on the new family member hubbys cat Casper was a stray as well but he is a very affectionate cat and will come when you call better than the dogs.

She ended up going to the bathroom behind my sofa and ruined my carpet 😥 She was a really old cat and I think she came from some older persons house who was a cat horder so she didn’t know any better. I had to find her a new home because she refused to come out of hiding and ruined the carpet in three of my rooms. I have a kitten that my husband got me for my bday and he is a nut. Has to be with you at all times and demands your full attention even when I’m on the computer, lol. I love cats!
We have 4 cats in the household, and they are all different… one is really bold, one just doesn’t care, one thinks she’s the queen, and one is just REALLY nervous/shy. He hides in terror whenever there is someone/something new in the house, or if a fan is running, or if you cough too loud… The thing is, he was raised by the family from a tiny kitten, not weaned yet, and he has always been treated very kindly and no one has ever even said a mean word to him. He’s just really shy. I would give your new cat some time though to adjust… 2 or 3 weeks should show an improvement! But the moral of the story is that some cats genuinely are just VERY shy. 🙂

My art: featherdust.comCongrats on the new kitty! What you are describing is pretty normal for a lot of cats – they don’t take change well. Several years ago I adopted a pair of Devon rexes from the breeder – they were 7 years old and had belonged to a couple. After the couple got pregnant they called the breeder and gave the cats back because they didn’t want the cats to “steal the baby’s breath and kill him/her” (twits) T-rex hid in the basement for a week and would only eat at night. Today I call him my snuggle bunny because he always has to be on my lap if I’m sitting down! 😀 It just took him a while to get used to the new place. On the other hand I’ve gotten cats that move in and take over the house – it all depends on their personality. When you take her to the vet tomorrow definitely bring a stool sample with you if she uses a litter pan. But don’t worry if she doesn’t go – stressed cats can hold it for a couple of days. The first Cat the I got was thrown out on the street by a friends niece. We brought him home and didnt see him for about a week. We just left his food out and he’d eat but he wouldn’t come near us. It took about a month before he’d come out and be petted, but now hes friendly, but kinda nervous aroung new people. The next cat I got was found half starved in a cardboard box and taken to the shelter i volunteer at . He’s the complete opposite, he slept on my neck at night , wouldnt shut up, and is an attention seeking lil butt head, but when new people come in the house hes gone in a flash.

LOL Nam, we have te same thing here. Owen is our scardy cat. You would think after about 9 or 10 years he’s stop running away and hiding from us. Then Bubba’s of course is the old man who is the king of the cats. Shady is the annoying one who is up your butt meowing for attention every two seconds and always tripping you, under your feet, when you have a box full of PYOs and Black Kitty is the cool lump of the house. She’s like a giant beanie baby and just doesn’t care about anything.
