Yea Wampus, you nailed it. I think that’s the best too. I LOVE the Lap dragon in Jolie’s siggy, but I saw someone selling one once that was like “Holy YUK!” It was COVERED in patina and looked just awful >_<

Yeah, have to admit that though I’m desperate to have one, I’d reject one that was too heavily patinaed. The one the store has pictured is just about a perfect balance as far as I’m concerned.
I love real copper patina on stuff that goes outside. For these guys, I like the “suggestion” of patina rather than a heavy hand with it.
January 11, 2012 at 9:01 pm #868876My vote is moderate patina…
I personally liked the look of them with only a hint of violet.. too much violet and it takes away from the copper (imo) with a hint it accents nicely without removing from the affect…Think there will be any copper Scratchings? I think he’d look gorgeous in that tone! and have you thought about doing a copper Uni? Could be cool! (Now watch there is a test paint of this somewhere I completely missed, lol)
January 11, 2012 at 9:21 pm #868879Every batch has been different. These pieces are random and individual. It kinda depends on who paints them and what the casting looks like to start with.
I have been encouraging painters to add more of the violet to them, because it seems that the majority of squeakers like it.
I can have them add more aqua green also I suppose. I don’t think the future ones will ever be as heavily textured as the first batch though. That was done as an experiment to try to either disguise, or enhance, certain casting defects.
Many of the Copper patina castings we use now have far fewer defects!
The castings are coming out better now, thank goodness.January 11, 2012 at 11:46 pm #868893I like having a mix of pieces. None of my copper patina dragons REALLY match, and I love it. My little fledgling has very little patina, my lap has a bit more, my baby oriental has a medium balanced amount and my male is so patina’d he looks like a different color entirely! I like being surprised and having individualized dragons, though in general, as lovely as the copper color is, I like heavy patina and heavy violet highlights.
January 12, 2012 at 1:22 am #868902Sorta randomish thought? If I ordered one when they restock, is there such a thing as putting a note on the order and asking for one with a lighter violet? Since as you mentioned, Melody, it will vary piece to piece with different painters and the like.. maybe one would have a lighter violet than others in the stock waiting for new owners 🙂 ‘Cause I know I won’t be winning the lighter violet vote, since everyone else likes the violet 🙂 Its just a personal taste kinda thing..

I think they box things as soon as they are done painting them and then just pull them off the shelf (they don’t even usually put them in the store till they are done with boxing in case something breaks). I don’t think they know which ones have more or less patina, violet, etc.

Gotcha! Makes sense, figured it didn’t hurt askin 🙂 Guess if I go for copper I’ll just have to take a leap of faith, or look for one that someone else already has for sale that has less violet…

You probably CAN email Susie when they restock and find out how the batch is looking though. She or Pam can probably give a general idea of the patina/violet mix (since they’re out of the CP stuff, it shouldn’t be a mixed group).
January 12, 2012 at 6:54 am #868926A new CP batch might look different from the previous CP batch, but all tend to look very close to their brothers or sisters in the same batch. If they look different from the last batch, I update the store photo. The photo for the male has been updated about 6 times.

Awesome, so store photos when they restock will be pretty close to what I’m lookin at gettin, that helps 🙂 Any prospect of Scratching coming out in CP?
January 14, 2012 at 8:41 pm #869130Regarding the violet–I bought the very first red-eyed CP Oriental Dragons, and ended up finding a happy home for them because they just never grew on me. BUT, when this new version came out, with more copper and purple, I snapped them up! I liked these so much better.
….and then was a little disappointed because the Adult and Young I got from this new batch don’t have even a quarter of the violet that the store photo shows. Love the copper highlights and amount of patina, but miss that violet.
So yais, more violet! It was a selling point on this color for me. 🙂
(Edit–If anyone has a pair with lots of violet and prefers them the other way, I’m down to trade! Seems like everyone likes the violet though.)
January 16, 2012 at 12:26 am #869274I finally figured out what I like about the patina on CP’s… The store photo at the moment of the Emp, he has a fair amount of the turquoise patina color, but I think what really draws me is he has a bit more antiquing on him, I really like the depth the dark tone in the crevices gives…
Is it this that people are referring to about liking the ‘more copper’? Less of that and more solid copper tone?
January 16, 2012 at 12:55 am #869278Chris, I have a young oriental with lots of violet-I like him but his texture is that weird “version 1” texture and I dont like that. If your CP young oriental has lots of patina on him and his scales are smooth, I’d be up for trading.
January 16, 2012 at 1:40 am #869288I only own the CP Fledgling, but I grew up in the 80’s and thus am still bonkers about anything that remotely resembles Teal (I drove a Teal Camaro – LOL). Am also a purple nut, so I also like the violet. If you think of them as weathered statues, it stands to reason that they would all look different. I can’t help thinking of pictures of the Little Mermaid Sculpture in Denmark and its beautiful patina. It would not be near so beautiful without it! So I say, bring on the teal – be it light or heavy handed and I LOVE it with the teal eyes. I just think its so unlike anything else that made it into production—that is what I really like about it.
