You guys are silly. Im gonna beat it some more since its my thread. π I still didnt take the comments as offensive. Rusti already said that she misunderstood and thought I was asking for medications and said what she thought was best. On line pet pharmacy in a fantasy forum? Uh, no. The steam advice and the like was exactly was I was looking for and it would take less time for me to start a topic than find a 24hr vet phone number and talk to a vet… provided there is one here. When Nam said E-vet I was thinking Electronic vet… π³ I was just irritated thinking that someone else already SHOULD have taken them to the vet and then the two ‘take them to the vet’ comments were enough. In this forum, where everyone asks everything, I felt I was kinda not given any leeway. *shrugs* I came back to check on my thread and I didnt want anyone thinking this drove me away or anything… as you can see, I am still around checking my topic π . It was several things and then this was just a ‘whatever’ last straw type of thing. I have never seen anyone on this forum dispense advice w/malicious intent. Ignorance sometimes, but never maliciousness. π I will also let you know what the vet says Thursday. Oh, and Ivan the Ugly got adopted… and I may be taking another puppy on after this weekend. A lady called the foundation and said a puppy had a broken leg and they couldnt afford to fix it. Stephani (the drunk LOL) took him to the vet and paid for it herself. Turns out the puppy was beaten (an 8 wk old puppy, mind you) and would be in the hospital for 4 months and cant leave his kennel till his recouparation is over. It cost over $1000. The pup belonged to a soldier!! I have never dealt with a bed-ridden puppy. Any advice on what questions I should ask the vet when I pick it up? Do they get bed sores? I have no idea… All I have been told is that he is on bed rest for 4 months. π Poor thing.
August 12, 2008 at 10:40 pm #727471yes.. dogs can get beds sores… especially on any pointy parts of their body (elbows, shoulders, ribs)
that’s sad about it’s leg… I’d find out what kind of diet it should have especially if it’s not supposed to have much movement..
and how is it supposed to exercise.. I would think it would need some kind of movement.. how are you to restrict movement… surely it can’t stay in the kennel the whole time…
those are the things I would ask about first…
hopefully they will give you some kind of care instructions because of the injury.. most vets have some kind of checklist for that kind of thing… at least ours does…

I always think of the good questions once I leave. π I said I would foster some pups and didnt even ask how old they were, what kind, what they looked like, how big, how long, medical history, where they came from, nothing. π All the questions came after the lady had already dropped them off and left. π
August 12, 2008 at 10:48 pm #727473It all depends on which leg is broken. If it’s one of the back legs then you can support the back end by looping a towel around the belly just in front of the legs. (At least that’s a good way to help older dogs with hip displasia. Sp?)
A sheepskin pad in the crate should help with reducing the bed sores.
Poor puppy…. π
The reason I posted that last post was because it seemed people were ganging up on Rusti. I knew that you Ski wouldn’t be asking for medication advice or anything like that. You have shown to me that you have a knack for saving animals. Funny, I never thought of steam until after Rusti suggested it. But, right now my mind is on too many other things…..
August 12, 2008 at 10:51 pm #727474The puppy will be crated most of the time except for potty breaks. He/She can be out but you’ll need to watch and make sure there isn’t much playing, running or activity as that will put stress on the healing limb and increase healing time for the leg.
Since I just fostered a dog with a broken leg and Ortho cases have a special place in my home, I actually know what I’m talking about here.
You guys remember Jax, who Jennifer did the wolf fund raiser for. That’s my current foster boy. His leg has healed although a bit crooked 15 casts and 4 extra weeks later The ortho dogs require you watch for sores and keep them clean and pottied but they are not nearly as much work as one would think.
Take him on, I find the ones who need extra are the most rewarding to help….of course I’m the foster home who’ll take anybody as long as they aren’t psycho cat killers. Cat killers are okay but foster dogs are NOT allowed to chew through crates, doors, and other pieces of the house in an attempt to kill the kitties. I draw the line there…but that about it π

Sun Dragon Koi #3August 12, 2008 at 11:04 pm #727475yeah.. if you get a good vet.. you can always call and ask all the questions you forgot… after you leave..
ours is really good about that if you call them…
August 12, 2008 at 11:13 pm #727476Ski, just write down any question that comes to mind, even if it’s after the case. That way, the next time, you’ll be armed. Or you can call with your list.
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

YEAH!!
The question to ask the vet is if the guy that did this to this poor puppy is locked up???August 13, 2008 at 2:27 am #727478I hated seeing abused animals at the SPCA… *sigh* I never had any with broken limbs though. So.. no help here. I just remember what my grandmother told me about when her cat got run over and broke her legs…
And believe me, it would not be help to you… for one thing, that was probably 30 years ago. π
