I think Rusti deals with a lot of stupid people who show up with animals who could have been helped, had they gone to the vet. I’ve worked with a rescue for almost 8 years and some of the things I’ve seen are pretty bad. I worked at a vet’s office too for a while and there are some very stupid animal owners out there.

I also think Ski wasn’t out of line because she knew she needed more information and someone here might have said, “that sounds like this it’ll be okay for a day or so as long as the pup is eating and drinking.” Sometimes you just need a second opinion when you’re dealing with a sick baby that tomorrow will be soon enough.

        Food for thought…

I agree with Setsuna…I would’ve asked the same, not to replace the vet…but for temp measures til I got to the vet. ALSO! It’s important to realize that even if someone gives advice, Ski isn’t chained and bound to TAKE it. She has the common sense to consider advice…such as looking up the safety of certain remedies before using them. It’s a ton easier to look up effects of Benadryl on dogs than it is to start off with a search of “snotty pups”. πŸ˜•

A call to the emergency vet (not an appointment, a call) is still free. I suggest that everybody do that first before coming here (including in the instance of bee stings, if you’re concerned…).

Most of the time the vet can and will give you advice on the phone as to what you probably ought to do, and it’s just easier to ask pointed questions in a live conversation. The forum should be a last resort, not the first step, if it’s going to be in your information gathering at all.

Oh for Pete’s sake, if it’s not an emergency situation, it sure doesn’t hurt to ask a question on the net prior to the veterinary appointment.

Sorry, you’re not going to convince me.

You can’t be sure that dosages for suggested medications found online are the correct ones. Garlic and onions (onions especially) cause hemolytic anemia, but some sites still recommend them for flea control, for example.

From a vet tech to a pet owner, all I’m asking is that you at least call your vet before asking a question online. No, it may not hurt, but sometimes, yes, yes it does. Very much so. And generally speaking the ethics of a CVT giving any kind of advice online is in question. We can’t do a physical exam, what if we suggest something based on the one symptom described but didn’t hear about the second symptom that would render that suggestion harmful or fatal, and any research doesn’t turn this up on the poster’s behalf, either? Just because it may not hurt this time, doesn’t mean it can’t the next.

Is calling your vet or e-vet really that much harder than asking a bunch of strangers for suggestions?

Here’s some food for thought I’m not suggesting that anyone here would do some of what the article writer and the comments say, but it’s a very slippery slope.

I don’t want to get involved with a fight over weather it’s alright to ask a question online about pet problems or not. I agree with Rusti. Being a vet tech, and a dog groomer (stupid how many people would go to me for health advice instead of a vet. Um, dog groomer not vet. I don’t know how many times I’ve had to tell people that.) But, being a vet tech, I’ve seen horrible instances where people have tried to “fix” a problem by themselves.

While asking what can I do about a sick dog until the vet opens especially where you can’t get to an emergency vet right away is alright. Not to offend anyone but, I wouldn’t try anything without a vets okay. It’s a good idea to stick the number to the emergency vet where you can easily find it. Some vets even have an after hours line that you can call.

There were times when as a dog groomer I did know what was wrong with the dog. But, since I was a groomer I had keep my mouth closed and tell them to see a vet. It’s no use giving advice when if you were wrong they could sue the pants off of you.

I don’t mind giving advise on how to nurse your sick dog or cat. How to force feed or force them to drink. If they have a high fever sometimes you have to do it. If you can’t afford to put your pet on an IV. Or how to give first aide. (Not that I think you’d be online if you had to give first aide…. But, just about anything else, I stay away from giving advise.

Yes asking a vet is number one priority, but I learn by asking questions, researching those answers, looking in books, etc. etc. I believe there are other ways to get the help and info you need until a professional can become available. Not all areas have E-Vets on call 24/7. I am done with this…I will not look at this thread again, or any PM’s if you need to PM me. I do agree with Rusti except for the fact that asking these questions online is idiotic.

same here….we dont have an e-vet…and I’ve always had a firm opinion that asking a question is never bad. Critisizing people for asking questions fosters a fear of asking…and then encourages ignorance. I agree that people shouldnt do stupid self-diagnosis’s for their pets (it can be deadly), but that’s not what ski was asking at all..her question was taken WAY out of context, innappropriately so. Your steam suggestion was the sort of answer she was looking for, and it coulda been given without the critisizm. I think perhaps you feel really strongly on this subject…and jumped to your cause too quickly, though it IS a good cause. I’m done here too. πŸ˜•
