Hmm, but when all the ladies ask about what’s dripping out from between their legs, or what’s wrong with their baby, or talking about ONE THOUSAND AND ONE other things that really DON’T belong here, no one seems to have an issue with it. (Except Frozen and I, who have mentioned it several times). Advice is dispensed freely on topics that could have a bearing on a human’s well being, but no one is opposed to that, no matter how life threatening or disgusting it can be.
Somedays I have to check to see if I typed WebMD.com into my toolbar by accident.
So why is the DOG taboo if HUMAN BODILY FUNCTIONS isn’t?
August 11, 2008 at 7:55 pm #727440I think Rusti deals with a lot of stupid people who show up with animals who could have been helped, had they gone to the vet. I’ve worked with a rescue for almost 8 years and some of the things I’ve seen are pretty bad. I worked at a vet’s office too for a while and there are some very stupid animal owners out there.
I also think Ski wasn’t out of line because she knew she needed more information and someone here might have said, “that sounds like this it’ll be okay for a day or so as long as the pup is eating and drinking.” Sometimes you just need a second opinion when you’re dealing with a sick baby that tomorrow will be soon enough.
Food for thought…

While I agree with that, it’s the hostility that’s being shown towards Ski for asking the question in the first place that I find is worse. Yes, she asked, and I’m sure she’s smart enough that she wouldn’t have given her dog anything without researching it first. Also, I think she was just making sure that with giving lots of water, making sure they are eating, and making sure things don’t get worse, that she was doing the right thing. Also possibly checking for other things to watch for.
So, okay, this wasn’t the best place to ask for that. But you don’t have to be hostile towards her for that.
The hostility is of your (general “your”) own making. Just because it’s not what you wanted to hear does not mean my intended tone was hostile.
My initial response was to simply and politely tell Ski she needed to see a vet. The rest? Is reaction and explanation. I won’t say take it as you will, because you obviously already have.
Thanks for reminding me why I’m not crazy about giving any advice online. Especially if it’s not what someone wanted to hear.

I know you’re not trying to be mean, but I have to say that if I was in Ski’s position, and you gave me the response you just gave Ski, then I would have felt like I was being an idiot…and I don’t think Ski (or anyone) deserves to feel in any way incompetent.
August 11, 2008 at 8:27 pm #727443Hey guys, I lets not argue, ok? As my defense, I asked for home remedies, not medications for the puppy for a cold. I was more looking for common knowlege fixes or temporary eases for the pup. The pup is not in any danger as far as I know. He is eating and drinking so he will live till his appt, which in Thursday morning. I didnt take Rustis comments as hostile at all. She was just doing what she thinks is best for the pet, though I truly was just looking for something I can do to ease the pups blockage. I wansnt sure about sucking it out with a sucky thing or giving Benedryl or what, so I figured maybe someone here would know what was ok. 🙂 She is right, though, for most cases, coming on line and asking for help for medical stuff is silly. This is not an emergency situation, though, so I figured it would be ok.
August 11, 2008 at 8:30 pm #727444That’s all in how you take it. I accept that some people really don’t know that it’s not a good idea.
But a defensive response to a suggestion that you ask the vet the next day they’re open instead of giving an OTC treatment suggested by a stranger (because let’s face it, while we all see each other here everyday, most of us are still strangers) is only going to beget a firm explanation as to why you shouldn’t do that. No, perhaps it wasn’t what anybody wanted to hear, but it was the best advice and the truth.
Nothing was personal, and there was no intention to treat anyone like an idiot, but I was also very concerned. Had you seen some of the things I’ve seen, your response would have been to figuratively wave your hands wildly and say “NO! Don’t do that!” too.
All of us need to think a moment before we post here asking for any kind of medical advice instead of asking a vet or a doctor, regardless of who populates the forum. Your doctor and your vet know best, the population of the Windstone forum probably doesn’t.

Close the bathroom door, turn on the shower and fill the bathroom up with steam and let the pup breathe the steam for a while. If he’s coughing and it’s a wet cough, you can cup your hand and gently pat his chest. It might help break things up. I’ve done this for myself from time to time. You can do it a couple times a day.
I misunderstood and thought you were asking for medication, and that really put springs in my heels. Benedryl is an antihistamine and unless his problems are allergy related it won’t help.

Was this directed at me? Im not sure but I didnt mean to be defensive. My initial reply was more along the lines of “geez guys, I know to take the puppy to the vet but someone may know something to ease the congestion till then.” It was just kind of irritating to have to deal with these pups and when I come asking for advice (albeit in the wrong place) to be told by both you and Star something that I already know, had already planned on, and was unable to do at the time. It was just a little annoying. Thanks for the advice… I have two puppyies with colds/congestion now. Yay. Snotty puppies.
August 11, 2008 at 9:59 pm #727447Good luck with the puppies, ski. I hope they get better soon. It’s really nice of you to foster pups! 😆

I can’t say that I’m thrilled about those posts either, Snap. I don’t tend to read them and as such don’t usually get involved.
I really think that we *all* need to consider the appropriate-ness of what we post. If it’s a medical issue, it probably doesn’t belong here, or if you do need to vent, spare us the details. I don’t come to the Community forum to read medical questions, or gynecological details.
Par for the course, as usual though, this rant is Off Topic for this thread. ;P
I think.

I think.Par for the course indeed but I certainly dont mind. Not like I have never drug a topic off course before. And what do you guys mean?? You dont want to know about feminine problems? Outrageous.
Im playin… I know what you mean. Im having a hard time with the “Yay, I had puppies” topics. I cant even bring myself to congratulate when I know that few if any of those pups will have a forever home. I guess im just a little melancholy.
August 11, 2008 at 10:32 pm #727450I stopped letting myself get emotionally involved a long time ago. My blood pressure has stabilized since then. ;P
Take that as you may, good or bad. It was my self defense mechanism, even if I do think there will always be a place in the world for good purebred dogs.
August 11, 2008 at 10:39 pm #727451Nope I agree with you Ski when I se the yay puppies threads I really want to use this:
for the same reason you said, I made my self pretty clear in assinnomns, sorry for hijacking that thread BTW, about what I feel a person needs to do BEFORE they breed and have yet to see someone on here that should be burdening the over population of dogs.
As for the other stuff I can ignore them, I agree with what Snap said as well about the threads where people share their bodily functions, I am fine with ranting, we all need a place (this is not it for me anymore), but some of the stuff is just wrong on an open forum IMO.

I agree that there will always be a place for GOOD purebred dogs, but I have yet to see an example here of people who should even be breeding, sorry.
