Good grief. I will see the vet… when they get me an appointment. Just figured with all the animal lovers on here someone would know something. Kennel cough, regular cold, something I have never thought of… but you are right. Asking for advice here was not the way to go.
Yes, we have an emergency vet, but they do not fall under the list of vets that work with the HDF and therefor will be full price; Something the HDF cannot afford to do. I will not pay for this out of pocket as if I did that for every pup I fostered, I would be in the poor house in a week. None of these pups are in the best of health… they all have something wrong. Sorry guys, im miffed that this wasnt checked out before I got them since she has had this particular litter over a week… though im sure that this woman has alot on her plate… but I still feel thats no excuse and im still miffed.
I understand being miffed that it wasn’t checked out in the first place, but I still maintain, and will always maintain, that the internet is not the place to go to for armchair pharmacology. I’ve experienced far too much animal pain to be soft-spoken about it. Asking folks what they think it might be is different so you can gauge whether or not it’s an emergency.
If puppy is eating, drinking and seems more or less OK except for green goo in his nose and a cough, he’ll be OK for the next couple of days, and generally the vet will try to get a sick baby in fairly quickly. Some places set aside appointment times for same-day cases.
You might call the emergency place and ask if the vet can give you some advice on the phone to tide you over. Veterinary advice on the phone is still free in most cases.
Best of luck.I agree and im sure he will be fine till the vet can see me. I know there is an emergency vet but they will probably need to see him. It was silly to ask since ya’ll cant see him or anything. Silly as asking if a dog has been stung by a bee when we cant even see the dog. (No offense, assinamon but it was silly on both our parts.)

You can’t bankrupt yourself doing it though. If the emergency vet isn’t covered, then, they’ll have to wait for an appointment, unless the lady in charge of the program has any other ideas.
I think the lady in charge of the program drinks rum for breakfast… talk about embarrasing… the first time I met her she was bringing me Bentley. She hugs me and calls me ‘Sweety’ (and has ever since) and seriously talks like shes on drugs. Well, she seems really nice regardless but when she goes to get in the car, Justin yells out “nice to meet you, DONT DRINK AND DRIVE.” My God, how mortifying… though I was secretly thinking the same thing. She just acts like that, though… odd.

Give that boy a Klondike Bar 😀
August 11, 2008 at 3:03 am #727429You’re kid yelled that out? 😯 They’s is getting bold these days aren’t they? 😆
I remember applying for a waitressing/bartender position at a bar, and the person interviewing me was drunk… but… somehow this seems worse (if she was actually drinking).
As for the dogs, same advice as everyone else, see the vet tomorrow, try to keep them drinking fluids, separate them for now, etc. I’m no vet.
August 11, 2008 at 5:38 am #727430Haha! Justin does know how to speak his mind. 😆 Poor Ski.
August 11, 2008 at 12:35 pm #727431HAHAHAHAH!!!! *Snort* I agree with Justin. 😆 😆
August 11, 2008 at 2:36 pm #727432Don’t worry Ski, I am sure that since you foster all kinds of daogs, that you have some good common sense about you when it comes to what to give, and what not to give to a dog. I would have done the same thing as you….I would have asked the same question on here while assuming the same thing you did. Plus, there are some reputable sites on the net that have been reviewed or written by the proffessionals in their field, you just have to find them. Benedryl is something my vet recommended for my dog when she was all swollen up, but I can’t remember the dosage. Also, I can’t remember if it was children’s benedryl he recommended or the regular stuff. (So I guess ignore my advice, or look it up in greater detail-either way, your vet is open today so you can ask him/her about it) 🙂
You don’t have to retract your question because someone doesn’t agree with it. I learned that on one of my posts where I retracted it, and then posted it back up because I finally realized I wasn’t in the wrong even though I was beign criticized by some while others liked my post.
Anyway, now I know why you have the “Aloha” post, and I am sorry you feel as such. 🙁August 11, 2008 at 3:59 pm #727433eaglefeather831 wrote:Don’t worry Ski, I am sure that since you foster all kinds of daogs, that you have some good common sense about you when it comes to what to give, and what not to give to a dog. When common sense is telling you that you need to see the vet, coming to an internet forum and asking for medical advice (either for yourself, or your pets) is probably not a good use of your time.
If anyone asking for pet advice had gone to the vet tech community on LJ and asked the same question, they would have received the response I gave. And probably with a lot more hostility. That folks (and not just Ski, I’ve seen several do it) would come here to ask what meds they should give to their pet instead of calling the vet for that advice alarms me.
What if someone who meant well advised the wrong thing?
Please, for the love of your pets, don’t ask about treatments on an internet forum, and if you think it’s an emergency, call the emergency vet and ask them if they think the dog needs to be seen, don’t waste precious minutes waiting for a response from someone online who may or may not be able to help you.
Guessing games as to what folks think the pet has is one thing, asking what meds to give (and even though there are vet techs here, we are not able to prescribe anything! We should not be diagnosing, issuing prescriptions, making a prognosis or doing surgery) is a question for your DVM.
I just don’t want to see anyone, or anyone’s pet get hurt because of seconds lost in an emergency, or because of a well-meaning “We gave this!” but horrible mistake.
I’m not trying to be contrary here, people, I’m trying to help you do what’s best for your animal!

Yes, she had common sense to see a vet, but it wasn’t open yet. And yes, your intentions are good, but there are many people here with lots of animal experience, and she didn’t want the doggie to suffer, so she was just exercising her options. I know you mean well, but asking questions about what to possibly do to ease her dogs symptoms aren’t a bad thing. I know we’re not vets, and their expertise is what should be followed, but Ski did not do anything wrong. When the professionals are not available, the only other people to turn to are common folk.
August 11, 2008 at 7:19 pm #727435I still disagree that asking for treatment options of anyone that isn’t a vet is a dangerous thing to do. Asking what we think it is is one thing, asking what meds to give of anyone but the vet is an entirely different devil.
It’s not a good idea.

They have had their first shots and the lady who was fostering them before me runs the Hawaii Dog Foundation, so I dont exactly know why they have not seen a vet for this cold and for a follow up on the skin condition since the female was being trated for the wrong parasite. When the vets are closed, the net is the best thing I have for advice, so while it is not fool proof, I figured someone on here may know something since we do have vet techs and animal lovers on here. Thanks PDC. I heard the Robitussin thing before but didnt know the advice actually came from a vet. Thats reasuring. I will try that depending on how long it takes the vet to get me in.
Just watch the dose for a puppy. My vet recommended Robituson D-D for dog is how I remember it-to treat kennel cough. baby puppies need much less tahn dogs with kennel Cough.

Sun Dragon Koi #3August 11, 2008 at 7:44 pm #727437So it’s not a good idea to go to the ignorant masses. While I agree with that, it’s the hostility that’s being shown towards Ski for asking the question in the first place that I find is worse. Yes, she asked, and I’m sure she’s smart enough that she wouldn’t have given her dog anything without researching it first. Also, I think she was just making sure that with giving lots of water, making sure they are eating, and making sure things don’t get worse, that she was doing the right thing. Also possibly checking for other things to watch for.
So, okay, this wasn’t the best place to ask for that. But you don’t have to be hostile towards her for that.
August 11, 2008 at 7:52 pm #727438They have several emergency vet clinics where I live – that is where I spent last night with Tristen and we got back home at 2:00 AM
