    1. A forum member has a layaway plan with me and had been doing money orders through the mail. She had recently told me she sent a money order on Oct 4. Thus far, it has never been found (no tracking or confirmation of delivery but then I never do that either and never lost anything). Any ideas about what should be done in this case?

    2. What do you do when you win something off of eBay and you try contacting the seller not only immediately after auctions end requesting total with insurance, etc., but also continue to contact the buyer and she never, ever contacts you back? Im use to paying immediately with PP which is what she wanted but I need a shipping total and understand how she will pack it. Ive still not received the total PP invoice I requested and her eBay is NOT set up to automatically send one so she must do them manually.

Im nervous that she will think Ive either not paid her or plan not to and immediately bang my feedback. BUT- it’s on record that Ive been contacting her through eBay channels. What can I do to get this sellers attention and is there anything eBay can do? If so, can you be specific about what I can do or where to go on eBay?

Thanks for your input here guys.
    Hugs, PT

#1 Usualy when someone makes a money order they have a slip that goes with it. Ask her to send you a copy of that slip, that would at least confirm that the money order was made. If after 30 days there is still noting she can ask the bank or post office to trace the money order. It will say if it was cashed or not. If not she can then cancel it and send you another.
#2 You can get her contact information. That would give you her telephone number. Plus every time you contacted her through ebay that message will appear in your sent messages from ebay.
If you are using ebay Canada: http://search.ebay.ca/_W0QQtZvbQQsofindtypeZ9
If you are on eBay US :

      Hope this helped

Hugs, PTI was gonna tell you the same thing BDW just did. Ask for the copy and call the place to see if its been cashed/even created, and then give it a few more days. It has not even been two weeks.

Also, how long has it been for the Ebay item? If its only been a few days, I would just be patient. Life interferes sometimes. Wait at least a week, and then yes, Ebay will give you her phone number and you can try to call her. I would not do that unless its been over a week or two, though. Hope this helps!

          2. If you can’t contact the seller, you can open a dispute with Ebay services. But I’d wait for two weeks before doing that too. Real life can sometimes be a pain.

Ooo that is scary! I think I might start doing that “signature apond receipt” at the post office when I send MO’s… they stick a return addrssed card on the front of the envelope and whoever gets it has to sign for it and then that card gets returned to the person who sent it! Therefore you know it made it to where it was going!!!

            #626412

I know and trust the forum member here so I know she made out the MO and sent it. I never questioned that; shes honest and you guys all like her. I have received other pieces of mail (and other MOs) from ppl that mailed them just a couple of days ago, way after she sent her’s, and they have reached me.

I know MO come with a top receipt (well, USPS ones do) and hopefully she kept that. Am I supposed to get a copy of that and track it or is she supposed to take it to her post office and have them track it? The latter makes more sense to me for they are the ones that would need her in front of them to tell them to cancel it, etc. Who eats it?

I didnt think anyone but the person it was made out to, could cash it. Wouldnt they have to prove they were me, at least in name? And, being that it’s not a check, how can you get it cancelled? I mean technically, it *is* money as she had to front it in order to get a MO made. She shouldnt have to come up with that amount of money again if they can cancel it.

Hopefully she will hang in there too and I say to wait longer as well. It’s just weird that the same day she sent it out was also the same day my new pet ID tags were sent to me… they didnt make it either and had to be redone and resent (and now arrived).

#2- the seller isnt giving me any personal communication. Ive been wanting a PP invoice from her and asked her each time to be sure she added insurance to the total (and to pack with proper bubble wrap and nested peanuts, etc). The invoice she sent me has no personal communication addressing how she will package and didnt have the insurance added to the bill. I dont know this seller and her feedback is near 98%- which is not only what I go by. Communication is important though I understand life gets in the way. I want to be sure that if I add insurance to the bill, that she will actually insure the darn thing. That requires personal communication so I know she read and understands what Im talking about. A couple sentences in an ebay mail or email would totally suffice. If you sell, you must be responsible to your buyers- or have someone do so for you if something happens (which I highly doubt). I dont care about getting ripped off for the insurance money- I care that she made a point of listing that double boxing was extra (which she also wont tell me how much it is), and Im worried about the piece breaking and me being SOL.

The only reason I like to be prompt is to make no mistake for trigger happy sellers who will pounce on you and leave you negative feedback for not paying right away. Hence, my immediate and daily tries at communicating with her- especially since she wanted to be paid right away.

Thanks for you advice guys. Hope youre all having a nice weekend.

The person who purchased the money order has to file a claim. This is what I got from the Canada Post website but I don’t think it would be much different from the US policy:

A Customer wishing to determine the status of their money order(s) when the payee claims it was not received or the sender claims to have misplaced or lost the money order will need to complete a pre-addressed Enquiry and Application for a Duplicate Postal Money Order available at the post office.

An Enquiry and Application for a Duplicate Money Order forms may be submitted to Money Order Services at any time. Canada Post will then investigate the matter.

Subject to the results of Canada Post’s inquiry, a replacement money order will be issued at no additional charge, typically no sooner than 50 days from the date of issue of a domestic Money Order, and 90 days from the date of issue of an international Money Order, in order to accommodate transit time.

But this also means you might be waiting for a long time if it is lost

PT, keep in mind that things coming from different places take different amounts of time to arrive, depending on where they are located in the the world. If its further away, its gonna take longer, so comparing it to other stuff you have received is not a good basis.

As for the seller, you didnt say how long it has been since you have been trying to contact her.

I have had one Postal International money order lost in the mail (to Canada). I think I had to wait 30 days (to see if eventually turned up) to file the claim. They ended up issuing me another one, as the first one was never found.

Maybe the seller doesn’t check eBay for messages often enough. Or maybe she is on Comcast…they are “upgrading” (haha!) and the last few days have been torture here…pages don’t load, etc.

The Post Office will charge a $5.00 fee to replace a lost MO. Most private issuers (such as grocery stores) charge $20.00 or $25.00. Most people buy MOs at a grocery store because the up-front fee is a whole lot less – usually around $0.25 instead of the Post Office’s $1.05).

Talk to your carrier. Mention that you are waiting on an overdue letter.

The USPS doesn’t consider a regular mail item (anything not sent Express or Registered) to be potentially lost until 21 days from the time of mailing. This would be Oct 25, which is still some time from now.

The onus is on your buyer to sort out the problem and eventually get the money to you, so in the meantime you should extend the layaway period. Your customer is not in default of the layaway plan, but the plan is extended by one payment. That way your customer can pay you the missing amount even whilst still waiting for the refund of the missing Money Order.

The eBay seller thing is put to rest and all is fine (and hopefully she will pack as well as she said she would).

Of course I know that distance dictates how long things take in the mail. But this memver is closer to me than other ppl paying me that have sent MO arriving from across the country in just a few days.

I dont mind waiting. And, as for extending the payment plan, Ive no worries about that either. Like I said, this is a nice forum member and is trustworthy. Im just sorry she is going through this. Im not demanding anything from her. I just hate that FL mail is unpredicatable at times. I’ll wait the amount of time and then she’ll have to do what she has to do. But for all intents and purposes, the simple letter should easily have arrived by now considering ppl from outside the US as well as the other coast have lapped her letter.

Im sure it will work out eventually.

I’ve lost letters in the mail so often that now I won’t send anything important without tracking. It’s just not worth the hassle of having to try and replace it.

I’m sure things will work out fine.
