I keep threatening to commission you .. but if I’m gonna move into a new house this Xmas, I’m going to need stuff for the WALLZ.
I still want my sad dragon picture we talked about many moons ago.
Is there a portion of the year you’re not working on commissions?

(She kind of takes commissions for jewelry at the moment, though…)Sorry for butting in, Nam. 😳
October 20, 2009 at 6:37 am #787790AnonymousAw Nam come on, you know you’re a FANTASTIC artist and painter.
If you get any better then I won’t be able to afford you.
October 20, 2009 at 6:38 am #787791You tell her, Snap.
October 20, 2009 at 6:39 am #787792AnonymousI’ll just have to stuff her Paypal at Xmas and she’ll come around. 😮
October 20, 2009 at 6:43 am #787793I kind of tried that; she didn’t want advance payment from me, though. 😳
October 20, 2009 at 5:49 pm #787794I’m actually not taking commission work right now… not sure when I will again.
What I am sometimes doing is if someone is pretty serious about seeing their idea born as a painting is if the idea is not so specific that it won’t sell to someone else… I’ll work on it when I’m able and then offer ‘first dibs’ to the interested party. That way neither of us are under an obligation .. I’m not stressed and daunted by the piece and the person isn’t obligated to buy if they don’t like it. I can then turn and show the piece and sell it to the public. This has been working well for me, but it only works with general ideas and not something very specific.
For example: I had someone approach me wanting an owl painted on a feather (hehe you know who you are). I painted an owl the way I wanted and really enjoyed working on the piece. This was not quite what the client wanted, but it was okay– the feather ended up selling to someone else so I still eventually made my time back, and I went on to do another owl that the first person liked and purchased. 🙂Right now I am trying to bulk up my wildlife aspect of my art and learn so that I can maybe go somewhere with this whole art thing. 🙂

My art: featherdust.comOctober 20, 2009 at 11:14 pm #787795AnonymousI would have thought that in the case of a painting, you would do a pencil sketch, agree on it, then pay 50% and move forward.
I dunno.. is that not how it works?

Oh yes. That is very close to how it usually works!
I currently loathe doing that type of work. I am super burned out on it. It’s all I’ve been doing for the last 10+ years. That’s all! It’s not personal or anything. This’ll sound really cliche- but as a creative, over-imaginative crazy person, if I don’t take a break and start doing some of my own ideas for a while I’m going to start hating art. And that’s not a good thing.Volunteer mod- I'm here to help! Email me for the best response: nambroth at gmail.com

I’m sure Koishii is being ironic, but Nam’s comment makes sense to me. Even work you love can turn into a drag when you have to constantly do it according to the wishes of others. That’s why I’m not looking to becoming a motorcycle mechanic or somesuch – I want greasy hands to stay fun. 😀

I haven’t painted in over two years and it shows, not sure if I really want to continue with art, have mixed feelings. Anyway…
Jennifer, you’re an incredible artist! I love your works and hope you continue working on your artwork. The series of bird studies I saw on dA are stunningly beautiful, I hope you get them framed and shown :).
And Koishii, I absolutely love your PYO’s, if I could afford it, I’d so commission one from you :D.
October 21, 2009 at 7:31 pm #787801I heard good things about your art at Gen Con as well. Some of the other artists who did that new animal deck that you did those two cards for were impressed. 🙂
