twindragon2 (that would be Sean) wanted to know if anyone has used clear nail polish as a clear coat for a pyo. He’d also like to know if the pyo would be ruined if he painted it all with nail polish. He’s using a small dragon.
Thankies!
twindragonsmum for twindragon2 😀

September 18, 2010 at 6:38 pm #827279I have used clear nail polish to seal Breyer Stablemate horses. It’s really hard not to get brush strokes, but otherwise worked really well. Very shiny and I like shiny things. 🙂
For the Muse Swap I bought Liquitex Gloss Varnish and that worked much better, in my opinion, than the nail polish. So I will be using it on the horses, from now on as well. It is also a lot less smelly. 🙂
Hope that helps.

September 18, 2010 at 6:39 pm #827280I think Kujacker has used nail polish, and Soulscape, but I don’t know if they used it all over.
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

I host the feedback lists, which are maintained by drag0nfeathers.

I know Nam has said gypsum needs to breath (the reason why we can’t paint them in oils and why the DecoColor art pens can only be used in tiny areas like the nails), and doing a quick search of nail polish components, there’s resins, plasticizers, and solvents (some of which are petroleum-based), plus a whole bunch of other crap that I’d worry about possibly suffocating the PYO. Maybe Nam can jump in to yah or nah.
September 18, 2010 at 7:38 pm #827283Yes, I’ve used nail polish on them in the past. Never in such huge amounts though. Just places like their nails, paw pads, and the occasional “high light area” or where I thought it would look interesting.
I recall someone using just nail polish on all the scales of a ki-rin before. A red color. Ah, here we go.
http://www.windstoneeditions.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=10081&hilit=nail+polish+kirin Nuke (now Soulscape) was the one, as Dragonmedley said.September 18, 2010 at 8:02 pm #827284I suppose you could always use nailpolish remover if you didn’t like it. 😆
In all seriousness though, I would dread that it would clump or dry weird and ruin the PYO. I suck at even painting my nails without getting them to look like a big mess, painting a PYO without screwing up the finish would probably be a HUGE pain.

He’s also found some that he thinks might work like the “invisible magic paint”. Thoughts? Oh, and generally I try to have me boyohs post their questions but they are in the middle of cooking at the moment. They’re entering a contest affiliated with the fair. Ethan is making Geen Curry Chicken (Thai). Sean is making Bleu Cheese Potatos au Gratin and they are both working on an appetizer called Emerald Butterflies… I can hardly wait – I’m starving over here and it smells divine!

This is the kind of nail polish I use. Mine is a dark blue that shifts to everything from brown and pink to black and purple.
I don’t know what he means for the nail polish that would look like the magic stuff. I’ve never seen everything like that, just metallics and such. Metallic nail polish tends to clump and look terrible, though.September 18, 2010 at 9:35 pm #827287My only concern would be the archival quality of the color…..There’s a chance nail polish colors may fade out, as they werent made to be put on a surface for years…most nail polishes are only worn for a couple weeks, then taken off with nail polish remover, or the coat refreshed when someones nailpaint chips.

The more coats you use the more it sparkles…

September 18, 2010 at 9:52 pm #827289aaaaaah…then I’d suppose your only worry would be yellowing. I’ve noticed some clearcoats tend to yellow over time, I’d say there would be a similar risk with a nailpolish clearcoating over extended time. I was thinking about the red, and that kirin when I made the earlier post…reds are notorious for fading, in any paint type.

Hmm… I’d say it’s a gamble. Any nail polish I’ve known that was clear with glitter or flakes in it yellowed horribly. My advice would be to test it on a pyo in a tiny spot, and see if it yellows over time (weeks, months?) and then go from there.
September 18, 2010 at 9:56 pm #827291I’ve noticed that… they always seem to turn a sickly pink *BLEH*!!!
