Deserted? Like, illegally? Did they ever catch him?
Not just deserted but missed troop movement (he was being deployed to Iraq). Don’t know if he’s been caught.
We didn’t realize they were gone. We hadn’t seen the car in a while and figured he was gone and his wife to the baby to be with family.
I came home one day to find a Sergeant waiting four housing to show up so they could make arrangements to move any remaning possessions out so the apartment can be rented out. He told me what happened.
The guy and his wife were really young. I’d say 20 at the most. According to my neighbor across from me the guy came to a party they were having and he wasn’t that smart.
February 23, 2007 at 2:16 pm #523015When people desert the Army, they dont go looking for them. If they happen to find you, though, they will bring you in. I knew a guy who had deserted and then got pulled over for a traffic violation. They saw he was wanted for deserting and took him in.
February 23, 2007 at 2:18 pm #523016I never knew that. I’m always learning something new even after being an army wife for 4 years.

It may be different now, since they need troops, but I cant see it. If they get him/her back, they will just end up in jail anyway! 😆

That does make sense. What are the penalties for deserting? It used to be the firing squad…

If they catch you, it could be anything from taking your rank and some money, to giving you a bad discharge and putting you in jail. It depends on the chain of command and the circumstances. Deserting to get out of a deployment is a bad one. He would probably get a few months jail time, then they would boot him out. Its hard to say, though.
February 23, 2007 at 2:56 pm #523020Can’t they give a deserted soldier a dishonorable discharge in absentia? I think that would make the most sense (which I know doesn’t mean anything in the military… 😛 )

Yep. They can. It hurts if a potential employer checks. They certainly will not be able to use their military career as a reference. 😯
