Hey all! I posted up my first PYO, actually first ever attempt to paint any figurine type. Obviously not an artist. Its dark turquoise all hand painted by brush so no awesome blending like all you great airbrushers out there. But anyways I had a little trouble with antiquing in particular, I kept wiping off the other paint had to retouch alot of spots. Am I suposed to put a clear coat on first then antique? Any advice before I do my next piece would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

August 10, 2011 at 9:21 pm #853238Hi Marilyn!
Yes – putting a clear coat on before you antique is highly recommended! Just one coat will do, let it dry completely before attempting to wipe antiquing medium on or off the sculpt. This should help you avoid damaging the underlying painted pattern 🙂
Hope this helps!!

August 11, 2011 at 1:56 am #853261I’ll be trying my first one too soon when I have the time, interesting first try…neato…
4 things I'm looking for:
1. Mother Meerkat
2. production color Sitting Young Oriental dragons to be made in more colors besides VF, Brimstone would be awesome!
3. Female Griffin – Siamese with White
4. September Raffle Prize 2022 AHD Male GriffinAugust 11, 2011 at 1:17 pm #853274When you antique, yes the underlying paint layer can sometimes wipe off accidentally!
This is usually caused by one or more of the following:
1. Some ‘craft’ grade paints do not adhere to the gypsum as strongly as other paints,
2. If the paints are applied too thin, they have a harder time adhering sometimes (especially if a thin layer is applied over a thick layer),
3. If the paint is not fully cured, it might not ahere firmly or may be easy to rub/wipe off. Total curing time (which is NOT the same as drying time– curing refers to the chemical process which sets the paints ‘hard’) for acrylics is 2-30 days depending on how thick they are applied and the humidity in your air,
4. If the PYO is dirty, dusty, has a lot of skin oils on it, or has ‘silicone disease’ sometimes paint does not stick to it as well,
5. Simply wiping too hard or with a rough surface (this is not easily avoided so don’t blame yourself if this happens),
6. Gremlins. As you can see there are a lot of things that can happen to make the paint tend to wipe off! For this reason, if you are having any trouble, it’s okay to wait until the paint cures, spray it with a clear coat, let the clear coat cure (times should be on the back of the can) and then antique. 🙂
