Here she is. A 10 wk old ugly. Some folks were trying to convince me its a shar pei mix… I tried to tell them the only reason it looks wrinkly is because it has NO HAIR! All bald puppies look like Shar Peis 🙄 It has mange. The Demodex kind, which the vet has informed me is not contagious and comes from the pups mother… though how it is not contagious if it came from her mother is beyond me… I will go read up. I think its a boxer mix. You?
She doesnt have a name yet, but I think something that starts with “B”.
A lady found her on the street and took her to the Humane Society. They kept her for a week, spayed her, and evaluated her, then told the lady who brought her in that she was considered “unadoptable” because of the mange and would put her down. The lady took her to the Hawaii Dog Foundation meet today and gave her to Stephani, who gave her to me. She is on a couple different meds and should be adoptable in a month or so. He hair… or whats left of it… looks brindle.

boxer mix… and poor mangey thing…
I thought all mange was contagious.. hmm..
November 16, 2008 at 5:21 am #740970She’s kinda cute, actually.
November 16, 2008 at 5:50 am #740971Demodex is a natural fauna on their skin, every dog has a few. A demodex infection like this is a secondary symptom, it indicates a somewhat weak immune system. The dog’s immune system cannot keep the growth of the mites under control and they go nuts like this and cause itchy problems. It’s more of a hereditary problem than a contagious one.
I also vote for boxer mix. Something about the shape of her little head.

I have seen dogs like this on Animal Cops, but never in person. She has lots of personality, and yes, she is kinda cute. I just think the mange is gross. She is a sweetheart, though, and loves to play. Remy adores her. 😆 They played for over an hour today and are both zonked now… which is where I should be.

Thanks Rusti. I read up on it and it made me understand alot better. Poor puppy. Hopefully the meds get the mites under control quick.
November 16, 2008 at 8:01 am #740973Awww!!!! So cute!! It’s a shame that they were going to put her down for something on her skin that is expected to clear up. 👿
November 16, 2008 at 10:52 am #740974Looks like a boxer/pit mix. She may be ugly now but I think once all the mange clears up, she we be a good look’n dog!
November 16, 2008 at 11:14 am #740975I agree with adara she is a pit mix, when she grows up she will probably look much like a game bred pitbull, lean as apposed to the “american bully” style pits.
November 16, 2008 at 2:36 pm #740976Poor thing! I’m glad she got rescued and I hope she bounces back quickly!
November 16, 2008 at 2:42 pm #740977Chinook saw the pic and said “Awww! She’s so cute! But you can see her brain…” 😆
I think she’s cute too. I know nothing of dog breeds, so I can’t give any input on that.
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmNovember 16, 2008 at 3:27 pm #740978I went thru the demodens with my girls. I believe there are 2 ways to get rid of it. One was dips and another is ivermectin. I did the ivermectin route. you start with small doses and then increase them. I was giving it everyday for about 10 weeks until it was under control. They were getting the doseage of a 100 pound animal daily( I used to joke they were toxic and glowed 😉 ) They are fine now, but I was told that when they get older it could come back. and yep, it’s hereditary. I was going to spay anyway but that clinched it forsure. No need to pass it on.
November 16, 2008 at 3:33 pm #740979O_O Poor puppy, I’m so glad she’s getting a second chance! With your help, she should be able to come back from the mange and have a good life. 🙂
November 16, 2008 at 3:43 pm #740980Aww, poor mangy puppy. At least it’s not Sarcoptic Mange, isn’t that one the one that’s much worse? Or do I have them mixed up?
