I finally completed my first PYO Unicorn this evening. She is a blue roan, and I really like how she turned out. I have to say that I much prefer painting this sculpt than the griffin. That was a total pain in my butt. But this unicorn was very enjoyable and everything went very smoothly. I’m probably gonna do a red roan next.

Her features include white blaze, pinking on the nose with kissy spots, two hind socks with hoof striping and ermine spots, and lots of roaning and shading. I hand painted everything in acrylics, and she has a satin finish.

wow she looks great! 😀 i really REALLY like how the hoof, blaze and muzzle came out! they look really awesome! spot on!! (i soooo gave up on my unicorns’ muzzle eons ago- i totally couldn’t get it right for anything) you did a really super job to where it all looks very natural and not “painted on” looking or blotchy. major congrats on her! 😀

Thanks so much! 😀 I was trying really hard to get a nice natural look. I think the roaning was actually the most tricky part for me. I think it turned out okay though. I need to learn how to master that, and then move on to dappling. Is it even possible to create realistic looking dapples without an airbrush?

I’m impressed travistie. She looks very realistic, especially the nose.

Supposedly it is possible to do them with a regular brush, just difficult. Considering how nicely your unicorn came out, I bet you could do it using lots of layers of thinned paint. (Which sounds like it would take forever. :/) I also have a back issue of JAH that shows how to do them using pastels. The effect there was nice, but I bet it’s harder than it looked in the article. 😆
