I’ve touched up small paint chips and have gotten pretty dang good about it–being a production artist makes you see color mixing a whole new way π
Up till now though I haven’t resculpted anything, but I bought this Jade Oriental with the intention to give it my first try. He was in terrible shape, very dirty, missing crystal ball, tarnished horns, nicks and chips, and a broken/repaired tail with a big chunk missing. Perfect fixer-upper! I gotta say, I couldn’t have done this without Drag0nFeathers’ tutorial–THANKS!!!! It’s great!
I did the usual touching up and filling in on his green areas, and touched up his gold where it was needed. The person who repaired his tail actually did an AWESOME job–seriously. You really can’t see the seam, even though the whole tail came off. I was way impressed. It’s a shame that big chip was missing, I guess they lost it before they put him back together. Either way, it was about 1/4″ diameter and good for my first attempt at resculpting. Here’s the chip before:
Here I’ve put on the epoxy: Billy Mays’ Mighty Putty!! I found it worked great for the job, in case anyone wants to give it a try. The epoxy Drag0nFeathers uses can be found online too. I was impatient and wanted to do it NOW π I imagine the legit stuff is a little better, this is a tiny bit coarse, but I sanded it down with some craft sanding films (like $2 at Michael’s and so worth it) and it was fine. I etched in the tail hair the best I could too.
And the paint! The color matches perfectly, but it needs just a touch more shading to blend completely. I’ll probably dry brush some on later, but for now I’m pleased with my first attempt:
Here he is before, so dirty, tarnished, broken, and ball-less! Poor little guy.
And after Chrisherself’s Tinker Treatment, with a shiny new toy, cleaned and buffed body, polished horns, and restored paint. Dawwwwwww, he so happeh. I LOVE this color and I’m so thrilled to finally have a Jade Oriental something. It’s definitely my favorite color.

July 31, 2009 at 2:15 am #777475That is a great job! I know how you feel because I had to do my first major repair on my grand unicorn. My hubby kicked a ball right at my windstones (funny-it was right after I scolded him to be careful with the ball, and he said, “I know, I know,” and then—WHAM!
My whole white unicorn family was in the corner that he kicked it, and fortunately only one was hurt. Unfortunately, the grand unicorn;s legs were sheared right off of the base. I was so upset (and my hubby was too-I just hugged him and told him to not beat himself over it too bad) but I was so grateful that I had apoxy sculpt and the white unicorn paint from Melody!! I don’t have any before pictures, but I think I fixed him up pretty darn well! You can see a tidbit of the damage left over because there is a section of the leg that sticks out, but I covered it pretty well.Isn’t it a nice-WHEW! feeling?? 8)
July 31, 2009 at 2:52 am #777476Yes it is! There’s such a nice feeling of accomplishment from fixing up a broken Windstone, and restoring it to its former glory. I have three in the works right now, I truly enjoy repairing them.
I actually have a white mother unicorn with a chip that’s driving me nuts–I can’t match the paint!! White, right?!?! Embarassing π³ Would you mind sending me an eensy bit? I seriously need less than 1/4 teaspoon. Let me know if you can–I’ll pay the shipping.
Thanks everyone π

Yes, yes, ask Melody. She wont charge a cent and I need to keep the paint that I have because I only have a tiny bit. I would send you some if I could, but Melody is your best bet!
July 31, 2009 at 8:58 pm #777480I didn’t even know you can send away for touchup paint from the factory π Guess I should have figured that if they send me those horns!! Thanks.
