Although I refuse to panic yet because all her tests are coming back great so far. She’s just been very dizzy for long periods of time.
Anyway, there is a funny anecdote here:
While we’re trying to figure out what’s causing these dizzy spells, the vet tells me that she’s probably not eating because she’s feeling nauseous. So she tells me about these pills that they have, and the added bonus (she says) is that they don’t cause drowsiness.
Well she’s not going to be driving or operating heavy machinery, so it doesn’t really matter to me if the pills cause drowsiness or not!
After a bit of discussion she agreed that I could give my dog children’s Gravol, which costs $5.00 for 12 pills. The pills she originally wanted to prescribe were $16.00… A PILL!!!
January 8, 2012 at 9:51 pm #868610Dogs operating heavy machinery–there’s a scary image! 😀
I hope they’re able to find something that helps, poor thing. And that the Gravol kills her nausea.

HAHA! I love that! $16.00 a pill is insane! Glad you had the option of a substitute most times there arent any. Hope all works out, I hate seeing any furry babies suffer. Not to mention the added family stress. Good luck with her LIH. Keep us updated.

I LOLed too ^_^
I do hope it is nothing serious LIH. My dog goes into spells too for sometimes 5 days to 2 weeks where he’s just acting “strange” and ends up having nothing at all wrong…I think he’s bi-polar. Hopefully, she’s just fine <3 Maybe she likes the attention of making you worried. ^_^

Just so you know, and anyone who has pets also. Most children’s medicine can be used on animals. It’s just a matter of adjusting dosage.
Or even adult’s medicine like ointment (like Polysporin).
Just ask your vet for the correct dosage.
After all, they were all tested on animals before being tested on humans.

All her tests are coming up fine so far. In fact, the different vets I’ve seen all keep saying how incredibly healthy she is and how good her test results are even compared to much younger dogs. So that’s been keeping me positive.
January 9, 2012 at 2:43 am #868642Hope your pup gets to feeling better! It is probably nothing…maybe just a touch of dehydration or something like that >.<

Just to clarify: Most children’s medicine can be used on mammal animals. Birds and probably reptiles too can have strange and powerful reactions to some children’s medication!

My art: featherdust.comJanuary 9, 2012 at 3:30 am #868647You guys would not believe the number of meds that crossover for dogs & cats from human medicine. Though the effects are sometimes very interesting.
For example, if you inject a cat intravenously with valium, he will eat everything you put in front of him immediately. We have done this with sick cats who refuse to eat, it works! If you have ever had to force feed a cat, you know that this is nothing short of a miracle drug, seriously. Force feeding a cat is a royal pain in the butt.
A lot of antibiotics are used for dogs & cats same as the ones for humans, interesting note, the cost of these for your dog is about half what it cost you when you get a prescription & the pills are the same, exactly the same down to manufacturer, figure that out.
I found when I was a vet tech that most of the drugs we used for the dogs & cats were exactly the same as the ones we use for humans, of course we had to adjust dosage for their weights, but still. Funny eh?

January 9, 2012 at 3:31 am #868648Thanks for the clarification Jennifer! I was thinking of cats and dogs because that’s the only animals we’ve ever had in my family, but it’s true that there are a lot of different types of pets out there!

In this particular case, a prescription medication for animals could be replaced by over the counter children’s medicine, so it was a lot less expensive.
However, in the past, I’ve had to give pain medication to my dog (for a tooth extraction), and my dad was getting the EXACT same pill, and my dad’s prescription cost 4 times more than my dog’s prescription!
January 9, 2012 at 5:48 pm #868678I hope your baby is feeling beter and the med is working. You can also go onliune and find animal meds a lot cheeper. FOr example Sentinel (heatworms) my vet chaqrges over $200 For a years supply (12 pills) and when I need them I check several websites and ususally find them for $125 or less with free shipping for an over 51 lb dog. The late, great Tristen had to have Rimadyl and again my vet charged $70 for a months supply and I found them for much less online. You have to have a vet’s prescription for them but most vets will OK them.
