Well work was fine, headed home.
Was a mile from my street when out of nowhere a big black lab dog comes dashing out of the field I was passing and runs right in front of my truck!
There was zero chance I could miss him, and I didn’t. I slammed on the brakes smoking my tires in vain hope somehow that would give him the time to get out of the way, it failed miserably…Wham!
I pull over and turn around, knowing damn well he isn’t going to make it, but not willing to just leave him. It was awful, he was a young dog and obviously sweet as can be, he’s struggling to get up, sees me coming to him and wags his tail for all he is worth, looking at me with trusting eyes expecting me to make it better. That look just crushed me.
I made him lie still, assessed the damages, moved him off the road and waited for him to go. There was nothing to be done, his ribcage had been crushed and a lung punctured, it was just a matter of minutes.
There’s a gal I know not far from where I was, Dorothy, she heard the screech of tires and came out to help. She knew who owned the pup, he wasn’t more than a year or so, and she sympathized with how bad I was feeling about hitting him…said she’d told the people time and time again to keep him penned, and they had failed at that. Since they have kids, we decided to leave the dog where he was, and leave a note on the door of their house.
I didn’t think leaving their dog on the porch would have been a good thing for the kids to come home to, but man I feel awful. I know there wasn’t a thing I could do to have avoided him, he dashed out with maybe 3 feet between him and the truck…but still I wish I could have.

October 15, 2008 at 1:18 am #736411🙁 “hugs” Kyrin so sorry this happen…
I wish people would be more responsible with their dogs and animals in general.
October 15, 2008 at 1:33 am #736412Ohh Kyrin..I am so sorry that you had to go through that, I know it must have been really hard to watch the dog…I witnessed a similar situation not too lon ago and I was in tears, I couldn’t stop thinking about it for quite some time.
Hopefully he didn’t suffer for too long… 🙁
It’s really frustrating, at least for me when people don’t make sure that their dog is safe especially if the dog can just run out onto the street. I always watch my dog like a hawk and I never let him off the leash unless he is in a fenced area where I know he cannot get out.Marzena

October 15, 2008 at 2:21 am #736414I’m so sorry. 😥 That would have been horrible.
October 15, 2008 at 2:46 am #736415Kyrin, I’m so sorry. What a horrible thing. 🙁 I’ve ranted and raved so many times about idiot dog owners who refuse to keep their dog contained. Dogs have no concept of how fast a car is moving. They can’t begin to comprehend it. And young ones are the worst for acting on impulse, without thinking or looking around. So many of the animals hit by cars are young.
For what it’s worth, that dog only saw that you were there to sit with him and comfort him. As far as he was concerned, a bolt of lightning had come down from the sky and struck him, and you were there for him. Thank you for sitting with him–it was a really kind thing to do, especially given how much pain this incident has cost you. Hang in there.
October 15, 2008 at 2:49 am #736416That must have been terrible… Poor pup. 🙁 *hugs*
October 15, 2008 at 2:51 am #736417Oh that’s horrible, nothing you could have done to prevent it, he shouldn’t have been running free. I’m so sorry this happened. I’m so glad to hear you stopped and sat with him, at least he wasn’t alone and had someone to comfort him.
Some people just leave. My best friends dog was hit by a car and the people didn’t even stop. A neighbor found him and took him to the vet, but it was too late. (Chance had for some reason known only to him-jumped through a screened window)
October 15, 2008 at 2:58 am #736418I’m so sorry. 😥 That’s happened to me too, where a dog has hit my car and there is nothing to be done. I get really upset with the owners because it is so preventable with dogs. Cats, not so much, they aren’t containable unless they are strictly indoor cats, but dogs can be contained, and the owners caused everyone all this preventable pain for nothing!!! Arghhh!!! 👿 👿 (Once I used it as a lesson to my 3 year old daughter who had a bad habit of running into the street that this would happen to her if she didn’t stop it. She stopped!!! Harsh but effective. I’m not sure I would do that again, though she didn’t seem to have been traumatized and I still have my daughter!)
October 15, 2008 at 3:01 am #736419Aw Kyrin! That really sucks! 😥 😥 😥 I’m so, so sorry. I wouldn’t expect anything less of you than to stay, but that must have been terribly hard. Poor baby you and poor baby pup 😥 😥 😥

October 15, 2008 at 5:49 am #736420Poor Kyrin! I’m sorry you had to deal with that, but like Barrdwing said, at least you stopped and comforted the dog.
October 15, 2008 at 9:28 am #736421Yeah, but the whole thing shouldn’t have happened, and knowing that he had kids who loved him and would be hurt by his loss didn’t make it any easier on me.
But considering the circumstances, my only options were to try to stop or swerve, I drive a Toyota 4Runner, swerving would have likely meant flipping the truck, and I have people depending on me, I just couldn’t risk that manuver.
I just wish that there had been more distance between us when he dashed out, a few extra feet would have made all the difference, he still might have been hit, but it wouldn’t have been so severe and he might have survived.
Oh well, there is no point in the what ifs, but damn these things upset me.

October 15, 2008 at 10:22 am #736422Are you Ok! Sorry about the puppy but they should of had him penned up
or on a chain in the yard. That was very thoughtful of you to stop, I’ve seen
people around here that just keep on going they could care less if they hit it
or not. It’s not your fault the owners were irresponsible! -
