Thanks Jennifer!
In the cage you have, what is a good number of finch size birds to put in? When I say I want a lot, I’m talking maybe 10?
I wonder if you could buy two of those cages and splice them together.
I know finches would do better in a wider cage rather than taller?
I just love the meep meep sounds they make! And so colorful!10? For Zebra finches, or what? 10 zebra finches is a lot different than 10 canaries or 10 mixed species. Personally I wouldn’t… I’d get a cage at least twice as large even just for zebras. But I’m obsessive. 😉 Be aware that somehow these tiny guys have a way of shooting poop outside of the cage.. have no idea quite how they managed to hit the wall 3′ away!
In general, wide cages are better than tall skinny ones. With exception to a few species, most birds are more comfortable flying horizontal, rather than up and down like a helicopter. 😉
If you’re doing more than one species you may want a small flight aviary. As BDW said, it’s a lot of research to determine what species and what gender can be safely housed together. The last thing you want is a poor little finch bleeding, and rushing them to the vet, and paying big bucks because one of the other birds decided to be a jerk! I’ve seen it happen. 🙁 And just know that unless you get them all at the same time, any new additions will need to be quarantined for 30 days if you can manage it. Birds can carry infectious diseases that are communicable to each other and these are especially prevalent in birds that are kept in large groups (finches, budgies, lovebirds, cockatiels) in many settings/pet shops/breeders.

My art: featherdust.comDecember 16, 2008 at 8:31 pm #630088That’s the one thing keeping me from getting them. I want a 6x6x6 or bigger aviary and I don’t have a place to keep it inside that I could enjoy. Someday.
Maybe I’ll start with a small cage and just get a couple.
I love the owl finches and gouldians, but zebras are so diverse in markings that I love them too.
The European Goldfinch is fabulous, but I’ve read they can be pushy towards other species.
I dunno. I wish I had space for an aviary inside the house. No point in setting up an outside one with heat… I’d never be able to enjoy!
I’ll stick with the ponies and cats for now!December 16, 2008 at 8:56 pm #630089I’m sorry but I misread “MESS” for NEST. 😳 (not sleeping much lately)
I have a cage exactly like this one and I put only 3 pairs or 6 birds in it the others are in a smaller (but still big enough) cage houses the last 4 birds…well actualy its now 3 since the female strawberry died last week.
I have 3 canaries, 3 greensinger mozambiques, 2 gouldians and 1 strawberry.
I purchased a huge HAGEN flight cage that is still boxed up at my mom’s until I can move and set it up. It’s like 5 times the size of the one pictured on top.
Jen is right Finches and canries like to fly and they need it to keep healthy. Same as the diet, they need a variety of foods.
I have tones of links saved up so I could help you there if you want to start caring for finches. I recomend that you start with a small number of birds first until you get the hang of it. I started with just one canry then added a greensinger then got mates for them and so on…I got babies before and just loved the experience! But if you go that way but don’t want to make it a revenue just make sure before you let them have chicks that those babies already have a place to go…keeping them adds up pretty fast! 🙄
If you want to buy a bird for the song make sure you do your homework there too…sometime they look real great and all pretty and you heard it sing a little but then once instablish at home they come out with their full song and ARGGGGG! 😮 Way to loud! 😕 Where is that cute little chirping song you heard before? I can help you there too.For the mess part: there is a way to minimize it depending on the cage model. some put nets around the bottom and a little over the side of the cage to catch the hulls and seeds. I put a clear plastic around my big cage held by vedcro on 2 sides and it overlaps at the bottom to drop in the pan… results less seeds on the floor but please keep in mind that you will still get some and may have to sweep everyday like I do.
But it is worth it! They bring my an amount of joy that I can’t find anywhere else. 😀I just found a pic on the internet of the same big flight cage I purchased at Petsmart:

What do you do with the babies?Well I usualy sell or give them to the petshop in Gatineau. But in this case I might try to sell them on my own. If they are the same color as the mother which is blue they sell for $200 each! WOW! but I would sell them for half that probable. I do like to know they are going to a good home…that is usualy my biggest problem. 😕
