December 15, 2008 at 8:46 pm #630081Do your birds make a huge mess? I’ve always wanted a huge cage with finch type birds, but all the birds seem to throw food everwhere.
Also, can you house different finch type birds in the same cage if it’s big enough?December 15, 2008 at 10:45 pm #630082Phoenix wrote:Do your birds make a huge mess? I’ve always wanted a huge cage with finch type birds, but all the birds seem to throw food everwhere.
Also, can you house different finch type birds in the same cage if it’s big enough? They make nest according to their size but I make it easy for them by purchasing already built nest and all they have to do is line it with materials I provide for them.
Yes you can house diferent species of finch together but you need to do some homework first and find out which species can’t be house with another.
And you shouldn’t put aggresive birds with others. Same thing with big birds shoul not be housed in with very small ones…the only reason I had my canary in the same cage as my strawberry is that my female canary is very kind towards other birds. 🙂
are you looking at setting yourself up with finches?December 16, 2008 at 2:32 pm #630083Yay, birdie babies! The nesting pix are adorable… So does this make you a ‘grandma’, BDW? 😀 😀 😀

I’ve worked with birds, from Zebra Finches to Macaws, both professionally and not, my whole life.
All birds make a mess– it is up to the individual to figure out what they think is a tolerable mess! All commonly kept companion birds forage for food (compared to how we are used to with most pets, where they have a food bowl and are happy to eat out of it). The level of mess depends greatly on the individual bird, how you have them set up, what you’re feeding, and other factors.
Some of the softbills (finches, canaries, etc) do have a tendency to ‘toss’ seed. This happens both as they forage, but more often after they eat the seed out of the hull; the hull is lightweight and non edible and gets tossed out or blown out when they fly.
However, these guys shouldn’t be fed seeds alone. That’d be sort of like feeding your child nothing but Mc Donald’s cheeseburgers its whole life- it may be okay but the possibility of health problems is higher. They need fresh fruits, veggies, and grains several times a week (every day if you can manage it). Which as you might imagine can get messy if they toss it around!
A large cage will, ironically, help cut down the mess. You have less concentration of bird to cage ratio (hehe) and they can get around much more easily. They need room to fly, fly fly! Cages like these: http://www.windycityparrot.com/page/Windycityparrot/CTGY/Flight
Are ideal. I have this cage and it’s a great one for the price.
Birds really need some natural sunlight too. Sunlight through a window won’t cut it… glass filters out the UVB that they need. You will either need to wheel them outside for some sunshine if you live where the weather is nice, or invest in a “bird light” that provides them with UVB. The UV allows their bodies to process their vitamin D3 and stay healthy.
As you can see, it can get pretty expensive to get set up with these guys. Also note that avian vets almost always charge more than cat and dog vets because birds are considered exotic! These guys take a bit of work and daily cleaning/food prep time. The days of a canary in a little bitty cage on a seed diet are gone!

In the cage you have, what is a good number of finch size birds to put in? When I say I want a lot, I’m talking maybe 10?
I wonder if you could buy two of those cages and splice them together.
I know finches would do better in a wider cage rather than taller?
I just love the meep meep sounds they make! And so colorful! -
