Glad the later hatchlings are doing well. Do you know why the first two greensingers died?
Actualy the first two (Bornin dec) didn’t die they are living seperatly from the parents. It’s the second batch that didn’t make it. They hatched but for some reason died. I still don’t know why.
Now the third batch hatched and they are now (today) leaving the nest.
Here are some pics:March 29, 2009 at 3:15 am #630193I am always amazed at how quickly they grow up! (just like my boys… *sigh*) You raise such lovely birds 😀

March 29, 2009 at 3:22 am #630194March 29, 2009 at 10:28 am #630195The canary eggs hatch. I’ve waited a long time for the two orance canaries to have babies.
March 25th
March 26th second chick is born. Notice the difference in the beak size just from 2 days appart 😮
Update on the two goldbreast waxbill….the female shares her affection between the male goldbreast and the male strawberry…they are soooo cute together!
I did notice that the male goldbreast would like to mate with the female so I may still have to seperate the strawberry male from them so there is no chasing and fighting. 🙁March 30, 2009 at 5:58 am #630196Thank you for those photos, BDW. It’s so neat to see the little hatchlings grow up.
March 30, 2009 at 12:51 pm #630197Wow, how neat to see those babies! How many birds do you have in total? 🙂

Too many!
I’ll be happy when all the babies are sold.
I usualy have an average of 10 adult birds.
But at the present I have:
3 adult canaries
3 adult greensingers
2 adult gouldians
1 adult strawberry finch, 2 adult goldbreast waxbill2 baby canaries
4 baby greensingers
3 baby goulddiansMarch 30, 2009 at 8:00 pm #630199Beautiful birds how can you bear to part with the babies I don’t think I could?
March 30, 2009 at 8:03 pm #630200That is a lot! At least birds don’t eat as much as dogs 😆 but I suppose you’re cleaning cages more often than you’d like!
How much do the little ones sell for? Do you sell them to a pet store or individuals? 🙂

It’s not easy, but I have to.

They still cost more then usual because of the chicks…you wouldn’t believe how much food those chicks go through! 😮
And yes cleaning all those cages takes me all day. It’s also difficult to get them to switch cages. Some are smart and get it right away, fly through the door into the next cage…but others I have to catch. Once a month I have to catch them all to trim the nails and the female canary has an overgrown beak so that gets trimed too. It’s alot of work but not as much as some other animals I would love to have.LOLMarch 31, 2009 at 4:23 am #630202Blackdesertwind wrote:Adaneth wrote:Wow, how neat to see those babies! March 31, 2009 at 10:19 am #630204😮 Very funny! XD
March 31, 2009 at 4:13 pm #630205I know you are having some problems with money especially since you are looking to move! Why not discourage your pairs from breeding in the future? Babies are cute as heck, but a ton of work and money (as you know, 😆 ). Continual breeding is really hard on momma bird’s system… And not to mention vest costs if something goes wrong (ack!). I know I try to keep at least $1,000 per bird for my flock in savings as an emergency fund, because a vet visit really could cost me that much each, or even more if it’s life-threatening.
How much time does it take you to care for them each day? I only have three but I know that it takes me at least an hour to two hours to clean, prepare fresh veggies and the like for them each day. XD

Hey Jen, I already removed all the nests. I know it’s hard on a female bird’s system if you do continual breeding that is why I usualy let them have only one or two clutch per seasons. The canaries do want to mate more but I’m preventing them to do so….want to give poor momma a long break (not till next year). I’m done for the year. They don’t cost that much more but I am looking forward to having only two cages to clean instaid of 3 or 4. It takes me about one hour to take care of them each day and only 10 minutes in the evening. I feed them the veggies only in the afternoon since we know that they need to be removed after max one hour to prevent problems.
I alternate the bath from one cage to the next (water change in between) while I’m getting ready for work and Michel to school.
The cages get a thorough cleaning on the weekend. 🙂 -
