The day I first discovered the Forum, all the discussions were about how the website got bogged down the day before when the Grab Bag Baby Candycorns hit the store. Windstone had announced the release day and time ahead of time and the site kept crashing all evening. That was why they don’t announce a day ahead of time. All I can suggest is that you “hide” money in your checking account to the tune of guestimated price of the grab bag + $100….
I think this new policy is good for Windstones but not so good for those of us on the edge financially. I’m going to miss alot of grab bags myself…. 🙁 :p
February 20, 2014 at 12:48 am #909006On announcing approximate date of a Grab Bag release: We stopped doing that because it caused too much activity on the website with people refreshing (or running auto-refresh scripts) and caused our site to become very very slow. We could try doing that again the next time we have a grab bag coming along – however we never really know when they will be ready, nor what the price will be – so its rather difficult to do! Maybe just always plan for a grab bag? We don’t generally have them less than a month apart. Keep a pre-paid bank card Grab Bag Piggy Bank fund for yourself?
On store watchers: You may still watch the store for someone who is absent and email me a message about it. Lately the grab bags have not sold out overly-quick and most people have been able to place an order for themselves even though someone else was watching the store for them.

For the price, they just don’t know in advance. They usually set price the day of release based on how much time it took to paint them. It’s not really fair for us to ask them to hold off on bringing in money that’s important to the business so it’s more convenient for our planning.
Bottom line – if we have the money when a piece we want is released, we can buy it. If we don’t have the money, we’ll have to hope it’s in stock when we do have the money or wait or pick it up second hand.
Honestly, this is in NO WAY different than any other shop you purchase from. Almost all online retailers ONLY take credit cards and ONLY take payment immediately. Most places you can purchase from don’t offer a “grace” period for purchases so you can get the money together. 🙂 The process with MOs was a huge exception and they’re just aligning with industry standards by changing it.

I think a Grab Bag Piggy Bank is a wonderful idea!
Life is beautiful.

Quoted for truth… When I want to buy a thing, be it something I know the price of or not, I just budget money away. If I can’t afford it at that moment, it makes me sad, but there are lots of things I cannot afford and I just try to save up for next time. 🙂
Speaking as someone with a very low volume of sales vs. Windstone… When I have folks that want to pay with a money order or check, it really turns into a headache. About 50% of the time the item doesn’t get paid for, and I am left ‘holding’ it in reserve for a while, when maybe someone else would have come along and bought it? There is also keeping track of everything, and, well, if I did more than 5 or 6 sales a month (which Windstone certainly does, especially with Grab Bags), it would be a nightmare.
The intent is hardly to discriminate against those that prefer Money Orders or those that use different money handling than other people do… it’s just to try and make things less INSANE at the factory when it comes to fulfilling orders! 🙂
