http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmIt’s official, I hate antiquing. I’m doing a black and gold dragon to go with my griffin and kirin. Initially, I had painted him gold, then drybrushed the black over, but he looked like he was shedding black skin to become gold. Cool effect, but not what I wanted. So I added a coat of black, thinking to antique him gold.
Wrong! The stupid gel either comes off to much or not enough. Then it’s too dry to come off properly. Even with a wet sponge, it stays… or the entire paint comes off! The paint is days dry, I even put one clear coat to protect the paint.
Now I have to repaint in black and see what I can do for my gold accents.
Is it possible my antiquing medium’s just not right? I have the DecoArt Staining Antiquing Medium. The instructions say to mix in equal parts… I have to say the gel is mighty thick.

Not alot, but enough so it was at a paint consistancy, maybe even a bit thinner if you are antiquing over very light colors. I usually antique a small section at a time and gently wipe against the grain with a damp papertowel. I tended to always take ALL the paint off though so now I just dip my fingers in some clean water and wipe it off like that and it worked really well. You just need to keep some papertowels around still though cause you just want your finger to be damp, not dripping or the paint will run everywhere once you touch the piece.

Dreamscape, Orion, Poison Dart, Fireberry, Spangler + Tigerberry DragonsI use the Decoart Staining and antiquing medium on all my pieces.. it’s kinda tricky (but I prefer it over anything else because it won’t dry too quickly!!). I use a combo of sponge, damp paper towels, and my fingers a lot to antique. It depends on the area… for example, the very textured scaly ares on the dragons, I can get away with a sponge then a swipe with the paper towels. Some areas are so small or “shallow” that I use my fingers a lot too.

My art: featherdust.comHmmm. I haven’t ever used antiquing gels or anything like that…I just use a darker shade of paint than that of the main color. I use alot of water to thin it down and over it goes…Although over a matt finish (especially metallics) I found a light clear coat always helps to keep the paint from sticking where I don’t want it. I jsut finished my first Kirin, and it was a bit tricky compared to the griffs and wolves…

Yea, and like Kirin scales I use my finger cause I always wipe away too much antique cause the area isn’t very detailed. Good point.
