SO if anyone saw my “request to Santa” or the “Vertigo” thread then you know I’ve been having a bad month…well…it just keeps getting better! My boyfriend Shaun just got fired from his job at Home Depot today (we work at the same one together which just makes things even more difficult) Two weeks before Christmas! No write up, no verbal discussion, just straight termination after being there for 6 years!
I was taken completely by surprise when a co-worker of mine came up to me asking why is Shaun in the office? I said I had no idea, I didn’t even know he was in there. We don’t work in departments anywhere near each other so I had no clue. Next thing I know his manager, John, comes around the corner with a really sad look on his face and told me to go and meet Shaun outside since they had to ESCORT him from the building! He had been fired! He works over in lumber and uses forklifts and large order picker machines on a regular basis. Apparently he was lifting a large load of wood yesterday and it had bowed in the center while in the air so it wouldn’t fit into the shelf he was directed to place in on. He had to get off the machine and lift the side of the load to straighten it out and get it on the shelf. I guess since he got off a machine while a load was in the air it was a safety violation and he was terminated due to that.
The whole thing is complete bull!!! THEN of course I was having a breakdown. How are we going to pay our bills or for our heat? So now were both outside crying, he doesn’t drive so he’s getting ready to walk home because he has to leave the premesis. I then stormed back into Home Depot ready to make a scene. I was looking for Ryan, the store manager that made the decision. John ran up to me and told me not to do something I’d regret and that what would we do if we both lost our jobs. As he was calming me down, Ryan walks by and whispers to John “you need to take this off the floor. I can’t have her crying out here” He wouldn’t even look at me in the face! It took every single ounce of self control NOT to REAM HIS butt out in front of everyone, but John is right. I can’t afford to get fired myself. He pulled some strings and I got to go home… well…job hunting with Shaun, but I was told I need to come back with a “better selling attitude” or else I’ll just wind up in the same position as Shaun. They are just trying to get rid of people, ESPECIALLY full timers who make decent money. I got my coat and ripped off my apron, then as I walked out Ryan just chirped out to me “Hope you have a great day Mandy!” What a sick bastard! It’s like he was getting off on knowing he has us right in the palm of his hand and I HAVE to swallow my pride and do whatever he says with a happy attitude because HE KNOWS I can’t loose my job now! God!!! I want nothing more to just tell him how inhuman he is and to stuff this job right up his behind, in more colorful words of course.
He’s always hated Shaun because he’s not a brown nose and doesn’t grovel before him like most of the people there do. John knows he does his job well though and always is the one he can count on. John wasn’t happy about it, but Ryan has the final word. Seriously, I know it’s a saftey violation, but write him up! Take away his fork lift license! Straight up firing with NO previous incidents! and THEN escorting him out like he was stealing or something 2 weeks before Christmas! I KNOW Ryan was just doing it maliciously because he LOVES having the feeling he is in control of EVERYTHING and EVERYONE! I swear that man has no soul! I don’t even know how we are going to survive if Shaun doesn’t get a new job FAST and now I have to go there tomorrow at 8am and act like nothing happened and be all cheery and happy for Ryan’s amusement!?!
I’m going to either get fired myself or get hauled out in cuffs for punching him in the face at the first smart remark he has with the stupid grin on his face!

without any kind of warning, write up, or formal reprimand then he definitely should be awarded unemployment benefits..

Yea, we stopped by the office right after it happened. He also called our human resources line to file a grievance, but I doubt it will actually do anything. I don’t think he should have been fired with no previous documentation

Even though NJ is an at will state, our co. still has one. If not, I hope Shawn finds another job very quickly.
If I were you, I would just vent and cuss here and not let your feelings show when you’re at work. I know that’s hard, but if Ryan gets off on controlling and hurting others, I wouldn’t give him any ammo. Maybe he is jealous of you and Shawn? You never know. I’ve worked with many people like that over the years…I’ve seen ’em come and I’ve seen ’em go. You may not want to make a career out of this job, but you do want to leave when you’re ready.

nah.. prolly won’t do much, except help his case for getting unemployment..
my sister has a crazy crap supervisor at work right now, and she’s had to file reports with human resources too, but so far it’s only managed to make the supervisor meaner..
mean people suck…

So the *first* thing you guys need to do is have Shaun go to the Unmployment Office, or whatever it’s called up there, and tell them the situation and see if they would consider it to be unfair dismissal. He may be able to fight it, and if so may be eligible for unemployment benefits.
*Then* you need to go out and try to find a replacement job for him.

That is utter bull****! From what you described, I’d say that yes, the store manager, Ryan, was just looking for something to get him on. ANYTHING. That is certainly not something to fire someone over. That is something that would normally only give a reprimand or small violation, maybe have to re-read some safety material, etc., not a firing over that, espeically with a clean record. Absolute bull.
Take deep breathes and please don’t do anything to get fired. Don’t give that idiot the pleasure (I’m being nice. I can’t write what I’d like to here for names. I’d love to claw his eyes out or something, but I’ll behave…). Best of luck to Shaun in finding something very soon.
