Never heard of it, but that’s ridiculous. She was one of the nobility who commissioned her portrait. Just nobody knows her full name.
I kid you not, it was brought up in my Art History classes on more than one occasion. It’s not proven to be true but is just a theory that is brought up usually when discussing whether the artist’s life has any bearing on art criticism in terms of the artist’s intentions. Usually a link is made to da Vinci’s supposed homosexuality, which i think is a bit weak considering being gay and being transgendered (if that’s what is to be taken from painting yourself as a woman to mean) are pretty different *chuckle*
December 7, 2006 at 6:18 am #514353You’re right. That’s a very weak argument.

Gotta love what some people come up with, eh? Heh heh.

I can imagine….the one I have now is very well done…..the first one I got was actually when they first came out…..and the only piece I have ever been disappointed with on the paint…..
I know if I had to do it myself I would probably go nuts….I’m much pickier with what I paint than with what other people paint….
but I still want to see the one you had painted in the other color…I forget which color you said it was….

Yes, I watched a Discovery program on it. In the program, they even mirrored some of his self portrait sketches and overlayed them on the Mona Lisa. I’m not convinced of the idea, but there were similarities that could possibly be more than coincidence.

Me too. I would like to see what other color variations you have done on her.
To be honest, she wasn’t a “must have” on my list when I first saw her. I think the 2 things that sold me though was the detail on her hair and the beautiful colors you used on her tail. It’s really hard to find nice sculpted mermaids. This is also one of the few “people” scultpures you have done which make it even more rare. Thanks for making her. Your mom was right! 😉

It might have been that he used some of his own features to paint the shading and such when Mona Lisa wasn’t available, my friend uses a mirror like that all the time and Rembrandt is famous for painting himself over and over again *chuckle*
December 7, 2006 at 5:50 pm #514359All artists unintentionally paint themselves into their work from time to time.. it’s natural! 🙂

😯 If anyone has ever read “The Golden Key” by Melanie Rawn, Kate Elliot and Jennifer Roberson, they will see why this comment is to be taken seriously! *you didn’t paint any of yourself into that dragon I got did you???* 😯December 7, 2006 at 7:20 pm #514362skigod377 wrote:Lokie, I love your signature! yeah you gotta get one….I loved the first one but was just disappointed with the paint…..and at the time just didn’t think about getting another….(it was a mail order thing that was complicated)
but I’m so glad I got another one…..and if there are ever any other colors I’ll probably get another….hehe
December 7, 2006 at 7:46 pm #514363Maybe I will justify the purchase of a Mermaid by giving it to my husband as a gift. He might appreciate her “attributes”. 😯 lol

Haha, that is what I will do with my bf. He likes smaller figured women. He will probably say, “gee, thanks”. 😆

There is no excuse for asymetrical nipple paint.December 8, 2006 at 3:55 am #514366Melody wrote:frozendragon wrote:Melody wrote:frozendragon wrote:my first sea jewel was kind of messed up and not so cool looking…..the second one I got is a whole lot better……and very pretty….
