i dont understand why we all have to suffer because some people dont know how to control themselves. Its not the fast food companies fault that people allow them selves to hit 300 plus pounds , but of course they blame the McDonalds and BK like they put a gun to thier heads and forced burgers down thier throats , i have gained weight from the fast food but i dont blame them i know i have to stop eating it so much , hence its my fault no one elses . Yes the population is nastly ( my own word :P) huge . There are very few people who can actully say it not thier faults they are fat , the other 90% have issues with not being able to keep away from the fridge . My favorite thing is now its called a disease , that ticks me off to no end , its a choice to stuff your face to bursting just like smoking and drinking none are a disease they are all choices made in the consious mind …ooh this topic steams me …any how Arbys has the best fries since there is no Hardees around here any more
March 22, 2008 at 1:39 pm #681217Most folks who are overweight know its their own fault. Its only a select few that choose to project blame for their own flaws on to others. And sometimes it is a medical issue… such as Thyroid problems, though this is not the majority either. 🙂

Haha, here here! I tend to agree. We all sat and watched some scientific studies last year about this and they took groups and studied them to debate what ‘metabolism’ has to do with weight gain or loss. The heavier people in the group said that their ‘thinner’ friends had a better metabolisim than they did and that was what caused the weight difference, and they denied that they ate more. Well they had special caloric meters on these people and little cameras that watched everything. They found that in normal, every day life (stereotypical lifestyle of average working american that is not an athlete) that metabolisim has very little effect on weight gain– all of the people in the study that remained a healthy body weight ate less and made healthier food choices, while those that were a heavier weight ate more and some of them made less than healthy choices. Those that were considered ‘unhealthy overwieght’ nearly always had a snack or food in their hand in the little videos! It was interesting. They often didn’t even realize they were doing it! There is a lot of curious psychology going on with this.
There are lots of health and physiological factors to this- yes, some people are genetically predisposed, and yes some people gain faster than others, and yes there are those with genuine disease that causes weight problems. Interestingly the genetic factors that can contribute most to weight gain are not necessarily problems with the body that cause it to gain weight, but rather psychological in that someone eats more (due to stress, or comfort, or any other factor). For example, the lady that nearly always had a snack or junk food and didn’t even really realize she was doing it. The brain can get addicted to the endorphins that are created when one eats, so it sends messages to eat even if there is no need.
It’s a very interesting field of study and there are people that dedicate their lives to learning it! 🙂
In the end, ultimately one is responsible for what and how much they eat (unless on a medical diet, such as those with diabetes, then you kinda gotta follow a plan oftentimes), and the fast food chains are only selling a product that you are willingly buying! Just like any item you consume, including drugs.

My art: featherdust.comMarch 22, 2008 at 9:45 pm #681219I gotta agree with twindragonsmum, the English “chips” or fries are like nothing we can get here, they are SO goood! Especially served with fried fish and malt vinegar. I don’t know why we can’t reproduce them here, but no matter what the fish and chips shops say, they just are not the same. Maybe it’s the kind of potatoes or the oil or the freshness, I don’t know, but if I could afford to, I would just fly over for one day, have a Saturday of fish and chips, a play at a West End theater, a Sunday pub dinner with hard cider on tap, and fly back. (What a fantasy!)
March 22, 2008 at 11:54 pm #681220I have to say that my Best friend and I used to be on that “Metabolism” thing, at least when you looked at us. Other than when we were directly together and eating the same meals, which was most of the time. I usually ate healthier foods, and snacked a lot less, and my usual snacks were a single regular size candy bar, or a McCain’s deep ‘N’ Delicious cake over a period of a week. while she’d eat those Party bags of Chips and several chocolate bars and every other type of “Candy/Junk food” you could name. However when we were both 5’10” she weighed around 100-110lbs and I 150lbs. Now however as adults she’s still the same hight, I’m 6ft even, and since Khym been trying to get back down to my pre-pregnancy of 200lbs(And trying to go lower as well, but that’s a different story) from my current 225lbs, she is tryint to stay at 250lbs, with out the “excuse” of Baby weight. And now she (I don’t live near her so can’t say for sure)theoretically eats healthier than I.
However the French Fries topic I used to eat alotof fries, however the only ones from fast food (Mostly chain)outlets I find I can stomach are the McDonalds, even with their change. and any of those places who put that stupid “French Fry Seasoning” on their fries need to remember what a Fry tastes like. I hate it I hate it I hate it!! And I really hate going into a restaurant and not knowing they are going to serve me fries with that on it, it has actually made sick to my stomach. I understand if I go in and see “Curly Fries” or some such, but not with nothing “Special” about the fries.
And even worse are those places where they tell you when you ask if they put it on, and then ask to have them not put it on, they say it can’t not be put on.

👿 👿 👿When i worked at BK about oh 15 years ago we had those “special” seasoned fries for a while and when they came in they already had the season on them before they were frozen so really we couldnt take the season off unless we sucked on each one and i dont think folks would like that 😛

When you decide to go, let me know, ’cause now I’m craving them (and England) and have NO WAY to get a fish and chips “fix”….. My fav’s always came from the shops that wrapped your order in yesterday’s newspaper to “carry away” (take out) and we’d have to hit Windsor (city) as well….. *off to update my passport*

I doubt if a law like this could pass (this year, anyway), but it just shows how the gov’t is insinuating itself into every aspect of peoples’ lives. Everyone has their pitchforks and torches set for the smokers, but when they’ve been swept into oblivion, who’s next? Looks like obese people.
I agree that people have a right to a smoke-free environment. If someone wants to smoke, they should do it where it doesn’t bother other people. The problem is, it never stops with just one group of people. The next group of people they want to limits rights for could include you. It starts with crappy french fries, but where does it end? Probably with McDonald’s being outlawed right alongside Marlboro. Just some food for thought….as it were.
March 23, 2008 at 12:09 pm #681224I dont think it will pass. I know the “all you can eat” places will be crushed, but I dont think it will happen.
March 23, 2008 at 1:33 pm #681225If they changed the oil they fry their french fries in, this is probably why ->
http://www.drlam.com/opinion/french_fries.cfm
I think they tried changing it once before, on a test group, and no one liked the new taste, so they left it, carcinogens and all. But I suppose they might have had changing it forced down their throats. c.c;
March 23, 2008 at 3:06 pm #681226Great. I liked fries a lot too. Haven’t ate any in a long time. Can’t wait to try the “new” flavor of them. 🙄
I love all you can eat places. They better not be affected cuz in Maryland there are a few crab houses down here that have all you can eat for a high price (but I pay it cuz it’s good 😛 )
I’ll raise a serious fit! 👿
My most wanted list: carnelian mouse wizard, copper patina frog wizard, autumn leaf poads, pumpkin spice kitties
