Every year since we put up the pool (2006 or 2007, can’t remember), we’ve had a couple of ducks who come and grace us with their presence. We call them Quick and Quack. It’s the same couple, because Quick (the female), limps. It makes for particularly ungraceful landings on the grass when she goes for the bird seed, but it doesn’t stop her and obviously doesn’t threaten her survival.
This year, they’re a bit out of luck as we devised a plan to have little or no water on the pool winter tarp, so they can’t swim on it – not that it deters them in any way: it’s a safe place away for the dogs.
See, our little greyhounds so love to chase the ducks, but once, the ducks didn’t see them coming until the dogs were on top of them. The dogs had to stop to let the ducks fly away – they don’t have a clue what to do with them! The chasing instinct is there, but not the hunting one, which is good, really, as I want mah ducks to come every spring!
Here they are this morning. Crappy pic through the window, between the blind thingies. Didn’t want to open the blind and scare them…
And on this one, Quick took flight…
to land on the fence.
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

LOL! That’s so funny! My dog is exactly the same way with squirrels. Whenever she would catch up to one, usually a youngster frozen in fear, she would look back at me with this look on her face: “Why isn’t it running? This is no fun, make it run please!!!”

She hates it when my mom leaves the house and will Fly After Her! She starts to make loud quacks when she heres the van coming home too! I am surprized at what a good little pet that duck is, only lets my mom pet her though, I guess I am not a part of the “flock” since I don’t live there.
