Macro lenses.
I need some advice from the good photographers in this forum about the macro lens or super macro. I have a Canon PowerShot S3 IS and would like to purchase a macro or super macro lens. What price range am I looking at? Is it good to get one of of eBay?
I’m also considering these products:

Your advice would be appreciated.December 28, 2007 at 7:54 am #650124I’m currently looking for a macro and telephoto lens for my Powershot A570 IS, what a cooincidence! From what I’ve noticed with lens on Ebay, you pretty much get what you pay for. The cheaper the lens, the more likely it will be to “fish-eye” your shots or not be as sharp as you would like. I’m going out tomorrow to visit a camera store and see if they have any actual Canon-brand lens, which I figure would be best especially since Canon has a good reputation for lens quality.
The adaptor is the easy part, I already got mine for about $25 bucks, but the challenge is getting a decent lens!
I’ve noticed that a few auctions for lens featured “demo” photos stolen from camera equipment websites, so I would say take your time and think real long before you buy.
I do know that lens from Canon direct tend to cost about $150 for the Powershot series, if that helps put prices into perspective!

All I can really remember is Carl Ziess lenses and Hasalblads 😆December 29, 2007 at 1:03 am #650126Thanks Sunhawk & Phoenix. I’ll wait to hear from your husband.
December 29, 2007 at 5:35 am #650127He’s back!
Out of the choices you gave he said the only one that was a true macro was # 4…
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=230206283283&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=013He said you don’t really want an adaptor to try to make another lens do a job it wasn’t designed to do. The example he gave was the F stop on the lens you have may be a 4, but if you use an adaptor, it makes the F stop an 8.
He said the # 4 choice is a good lens for the price and you wouldn’t really have to upgrade unless you wanted to go even closer.
Hope this helps. If you have an questions, just ask. He’s been published both nationally and internationally. He’ll be working most of tomorrow, but hopefully he’ll be home early!December 30, 2007 at 6:48 am #650128Okay so I actually went out to a few camera stores and managed to buy myself a macro lens! LOL After talking to the salesman, I ended up going with a Kenko macro lens (52mm to go on my adaptor) because he said that the Canon macro lens weren’t actually very good, since they were actually produced by an outsource company (is he right, it’s hard to say, just to add a grain of salt) and while the decrease in distance is a bit slight, it does seem to be a lovely, clear lens with no fish-eye or cameo-ing (like I can’t see the lens edge or the adaptor) and I think it can be just as good a deal to go in person to the store, because they definitely took off at least 30 bucks on each lens I got (I also got a telephoto lens, that one was an actual Canon lens LOL) and rounded the number down to an even number since I was paying in cash. Paying in cash makes them more likely to round it down! ^_^
I hope that helps a bit, since I know that Kenko is supposed to be a good brand. I have also read that you should avoid Opteka and Phoenix brand lenses (Sorry Phoenix, not you the user LOL)
