I might have missed it mentioned, but Arlla did one as well. And probably others not mentioned too, but my memory isn’t the best.

And Serenity’s stuck because it was the last I saw in a PYO thread. Plus I have a couple of her Griffins too.
April 17, 2010 at 2:09 pm #811026Everyone’s red and blacks are gorgeous, that gives me hope! Also, I hadn’t planned on using oils on my PYO’s. To be honest, I can’t imagine how I could manage with oil textures on something like this! lol. I’ve been doing my research on some different acryllics. Haven’t decided which I want yet, though.

I like him both ways!!! Why did you decide to repaint?
April 17, 2010 at 2:54 pm #811028Well, he was inspired and painted for a friend…and said friend got a girlfriend and stopped showing up online to talk, so I got depressed/angry and repainted the dragon. :nea:

Well then, that’s a good reason! He’s lovely even in the repaint. 🙂
April 17, 2010 at 3:32 pm #811030I did a black and red dragon as a present for a friend.
April 17, 2010 at 3:50 pm #811031DO NOT USE OILS!!! They can damage the PYO itself. I can’t remember when or where I heard that, but I know I either read it, or heard it. 🙂
April 17, 2010 at 3:55 pm #811032I remember hearing that as well WSC. It’s because the oils wouldn’t allow the gypsum to “breathe” if I remember correctly. I think it was mentioned in the PYO FAQ thread. *Goes to look* Found it!

You can do whatever you want as long as it doesn’t infringe on Windstone’s intellectual property or rules! That said, will every kind of paint work well on a PYO? Probably not. It’s up to you to decide how much of a risk to take.
- Oil based paints– Not really a good idea. They look and blend very well, but over time may cause damage to your PYO. Gypsum stone likes to be able to ‘breathe’ as it is a mineral stone, so things like moisture and climate can effect it. Normally with acrylic paints this is not a problem because they allow it to breathe. Oils do not.[/*:m]
- Enamel based paints– Not a good idea for the same reason as oils are not. They are usually okay in small areas (like details, claws…) but it’s probably not a good idea to completely paint a PYO with them. Be aware that many model paints can be enamel based so read labels well.[/*:m]
- Watercolors– Watercolors shouldn’t harm a PYO, but they can be hard to use properly. As some of you have already experienced, the gypsum will suck the watercolor paint right out of your brush and it can create an uneven look. Also be careful not to get the PYO too soaking wet because it seems to ‘blend’ the physical details and make them a little mooshy. Use with caution, but the effects can be very different than acrylic paints. They will tend to look ‘flat’ and not be glossy or as rich in color.[/*:m]
- Other materials– I don’t know! I haven’t used anything crazy on my PYO to paint it. Melody has used condiments on one, which looks interesting but she doesn’t recommend it (the PYO stinks now apparently!). Use your imagination and feel free to experiment! Just bear in mind that some things may be harmful to the PYO (don’t paint with hydrochloric acid) and that it may not be archiveable.[/*:m]

April 17, 2010 at 4:17 pm #811035I won’t use my oils, I swear! 😆
