UGH! I was typing a reply when the cat ran over the keybord right as I finished and shut the computer down! 😐
So he is sticking around, but mostly on my neighbors balcony right now. He come over here mostly to eat and terrorize my cat. I did build him a nest box with a platform for the railing.
more hay is under the chairs, and there are two things of feed and two dishes of water, one deep and one shallow (a tupperware lid) on my porch. I filled the seed yesterday morning and he chowed it in the early afternoon. I’ll have to put more out this morning. Do I have to worry about overfeeding him?
He has been staying on my neighbors porch mostly, and coming over in the day to eat. He sits out there calling most of the day. The best fun I have had with him, is when I sit by the door or my bedroom window talking with him. I found a scaled quail call on a bird site and recorded in on my recorded. He’ll call and I will “call” back with one of my four calls. and wait for him again. It is kinda fun. He will do for hours. Poor guys is all alone, probably looking for his girlfriend. 🙂 I am pretty sure it is a he. “He” lacks the sideways mark on a females face. He is out there calling out on the neighbors patio right now.
He was over here most of the time til five days ago. He had been on the nest platform and I cracked the door slightly so I could pull the screen door closed to let some air in without Harriat trying to eat him. My teeny little cat managed to slip out the 2 in gap in the door (i haven’t a clue how O_o) and jumped up after his tail. I was able to snag her out of the air and bring her back in, and Cam fluttered up to roof with a purring-clucking sound where he landed and layed down to peer over the edge at me. He stayed on the neighbors patio until hunger got the best of him yesterday. He is still a little spooked (no surprised) but he still walks right up to the window while Harriat jumps all over it.
I think he knows I am the one that can open the door (letting the cat out), so he fly’s up to railing if I near the door. I think he also knows that I am am the one that feeds him too though.. He flew back over after a couple hours last night, but I hope that as he gets more comfortable, he will move into my box. There is also a small bowl of oats and bird seed on the platform, but of course he prefers the quail food. We went to a local country store who actually carried specifically quail food. I don’t think you can get much closer than that!

If he’s still able to fly about, then he’s not getting too fat. More likely he’s been on short commons for a while now and is just ecstatic to have someone putting food out for him! Now he can make up for lost time.
I think the box is fantastic. The way you’ve got it so that its base fits over the balcony railing is downright inspired!
March 18, 2014 at 4:21 pm #909932So the apartment complex worker guy showed up today, and I guess we are supposed to stop feeding him, take my box down and “shoo him away” as neighbors all over the complex have been complaining about him calling during the day.
I told him that shooing away would not work and that he just fly back anyways (he is back on the porch within minutes of the door closing and has been like that since he showed up.) I said he wasn’t gonna push it too hard, knowing that he had actually been around for two week prior in the senior housing with a california quail eating an older lady’s song bird seed and drinking out of her bird bath. He assumed it was a female because at that time it was with a california quail, and as neither were the least bit afraid of people he had too figured that someones birds got loose.
I have called a local wildlife group about catching and relocating Cam to a better place. I hope the complex doesn’t try to trap and release him. I have a feeling he would walk right up to a fox to see what it looks like..

March 19, 2014 at 12:25 am #909977Ya I know. I was able to contact a 50c.3 group today, but legally they cannot take him they can rehabilitate him and it would be really hard to have to relocate him so far south, and also said that being as “domestic”as he is (walking up to people and wanting to have tea party with my bird hungry CAT) he would probably do best in an aviary.
She recommended I give a call to local co-ops for a list of local aviaries and start calling around to find out if somebody has lost a couple of birds. If nobody has, I could try to adopt him out. I let them know in the office and she actually called me while I was down there. They don’t seem too worried as long as I am looking into it, and they both honestly think that it is stupid that someone would complain.
I get the noise, he wakes me up every day between 7:30 and 8:00, but we live in a small town that is KNOWN for it’s local wildlife and beauty. I figure it is because it is spring, and the poor guy is probably just lookin for a girlfriend. Hopefully if I can find a good aviary, he’ll get one. I still really like him though. Is it wrong to be so attached to fluffy cute friendliness? I see both sides of the argument. I just personally love animals, and it is definitely one of the highlights of my day to see him out there and so happy in the mornings.
I’ll just sit by the dorr and watch him with the cat. 🙂

I would be so tempted to scoop him up and keep him if I saw him outside alone! I used to have an African Grey parrot, although I had to rehome him because we moved so many times the last few years and didn’t want that to stress him out. I miss him but he went to a good home with other parrots in the family.

March 24, 2014 at 9:13 pm #910454I got the African Grey as a baby and had him maybe 6 or 7 years or so. When my mom and I went through two house foreclosures because of a private lender who put us through we had to move to a rental and the poor bird had to go through 3 moves by the time we moved there and he was so stressed he was picking his feathers and we didn’t know what to do. We realized we may have to move again so found him a good home with people who had other parrots and were in a stable home. They have me on facebook and told me last year he stopped picking his feathers finally so I was happy about that! We have since moved over 10 times in the last four years as we have not had much luck with finding a rental that was pet friendly, didn’t have loud neighbors next door or in the basement, didn’t have neighbors dogs out barking all day or didn’t have black mold or appliances not working. I don’t mind the place we are in now but am glad we found our poor bird another home before moving that many times. I like the video of your bird calling!
